Upload Page Is A Real Pain......

Sat Oct 19, 2002 2:19 am

I have been uploading to this site more than 2 years now and have pretty much enjoyed it so far, not that I am going to stop, but nowadays it takes ages for the "http:www.airliners.net/addphotos" / upload page to load.

I have asked some fellow a.net user about 2 months ago and it seems that everyone has the same problem.

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/aviation_photography/read.main/60346/

Is this gonna stay this way, or is there improvement on it's way.

Thanks

I agree Vasco

Itll load the space for the file path but itll stall for a bit for all the other stuff to come on....I dont know why the heck it does that. Its not an user speed issue too because im running Cable not 56k and it stalls for a while.

Also when returning to the upload page for more uploads, some menus always reset (airport and aircraft type).

I too have noticed how long the full page takes to load up ... i have in the past just put it down to "accessing" the relevant place on the server ..

i have just uploaded an image and it took 6 minutes to load the page fully  Confused even with broadband connection !

but still , there may be a fault there may not be .... only Johan perhaps can answer that !

It could also be the amount of people accessing that page ..

Well as I stated in an earlier thread, for me it is a whole lot worse. In addition to the long load (which never happens) I keep getting those dreaded 'screen freezes'. Frankly while I hate to see anyone else suffer, I am however relieved to see that a few others are having difficulties as a result perhaps now these problem(s) might be addressed.

it is slowest during the sites busy times, which seem to be (in my local time, Pacific time zone) 6am to 1pm. If you do it in the middle of the night it loads much faster. Maybe give it a try on off-peak hours.

Here's another suggestion that relates to the upload process (and may be augmenting the problem).

I just had a bunch rejected for a minor, technical infraction. I repaired the problem and went through the whole (re-)upload process from scratch.

Is there any way we could, for example, just re-upload the image only? So this way you don't have to re-enter (typing or cut 'n paste) ALL the information over again. It took me an hour to re-upload 10 images yesterday. And one of them got rejected again because, despite typing the correct information in the "Aircraft and Other Aircraft Generic" fields, my 727-022 image showed up as a Boeing 022! REJECTED! Badinfo! (So I re-re-uploaded it with proper info.)

Maybe there could be a "re-upload of rejected photos" page that is similar to the appeal page? Where all the info is retained and simply the image is replaced with a new one?

I think this would relieve a lot of workload from not only the photographers, but screeners as well as perhaps there won't be any typos or badinfo on the re-uploads. I can honestly say my mind was bleary from all the uploading I've done in the past three days and it was harder to detect typos...

Anyone agree?

exactly 2:42:46!!!!!! 3 minutes!!!!

and by the way, I´m using DSL!

that´s the main reason that I don´t upload pretty much; even FRA gets some interesting stuff to show...

Agree 100%,

Even with a broadband connection the page takes ages to load up (Although the adverts always load quickly Big grin )

I am in the bizarre situation that the page takes longer to load up, than it does to upload my photo !!

Agree to with the menu resets which can be a real pain.......hopefully the page will start to behave soon  Smile

Hi All,

The whole site is slow today for some reason we have been having real trouble screening. You guys are lucky you want to try waiting for 50 pictures to load in one go!

I'm sure Johan has the situation under control, fingers crossed!

Cheers

yeah, it happens to me as well.
I find the best time to upload is around night time. Midnight seems to be fairly quick on the loading times, but how many of us will actually wait until then.

The Upload directory tab thing loads immediately, while the other menu colums take a while longer.

I have the view the medium sized photos because of the time it takes for a large photo to load (have cable modem BTW). I think we're all pretty much experiencing the same problems. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.  Smile

Hi all,

here is a good tip: in stead of using internet explorer 6.0 to upload your pictures you better use opera 6.05 (free)

Why? If you have multiple pictures and want to add another one with IE the info is lost but... with Opera all the information stays.

Maybe we can ask Johan to give us the full HTML-coding of the uploadpages so we can make a ghost-page to upload our pictures on let's say: www.mysite.be/a.netupload

Just an idea!

greetings,

luchtzak

Maybe it's just me... but I can't say I've ever had a problem with the upload page. Works just fine for me and on average I upload around 800kb size images using IE6 and cable modem.

Yes... I have to wait a while before the whole upload page is shown.
It always stops after the Select File field and then after a time the rest is shown

I don't know how the underlying page is constructed but I'm willing to bet that the data for the drop-down boxes comes from the database or some other offline storage, like a load of files holding the data. There's then a process which grabs this data and spits it out as proper HTML to generate the list boxes. IT's probably this code that's at fault. Possibly solutions are to optimise the code, the medium it's stored on or to render the page once and then cache that version and present it to everyone else.

Kingwide,

this really sounds like an excellent idea. I allready tried to fit in the HTML-coding in my website. But I get stuck with 2 of the dropdown-boxes.
I believe Johan made it easier for the database-guys to arrange some menus.

Question for Johan: what about the idea of making satelite-websites around the world so the uploading-proces would go faster? Maybe you can e-mail 4 or 5 guys with a aviation-dedicated-airliners.net-spirited website?

kind regards,

luchtzak

Same here....it does stall after the file select box and I have cable-modem ISP.

Also, I'm with ExitRow...I'd like to see a re-upload page to re-upload ONLY rejected pics where all the info from the original stays in. It would save photographers an awful lot of time....

so we can spend more time shooting  Smile

On the subject of re-entering the info whe uploading, I've found that with IE6, when I place my cursor in the manual entry fields (i.e. Reg number) if I press the down arrow cursor key I get a drop down menu of ALL the entries I have ever made for that particular field, making the whole re-upload process considerably easier for me.

Of course if someone could furnish me with speed reading goggles.....

Hope that helps

Got one suggestion abt the upload page..

When we first load it, could we just save it on our hard disk and fire it up whenever we want to upload it? Not sure if this would work.... anybody knows???

Problem with that is (I think) that when the database is updated for different aircraft types, as seen recently, then the locally saved version will be out of sync with the main database.

Of course... I could be talking rubbish!

Hello,

I am fully aware of the "beast" the upload page has become after years of adding more and more information and functionality to it. We are working on a Java based upload program that can be downloaded and ran off your computer that will make uploading much easier and quicker! It's still far from being finished though so please have patience.

Thanks,
Johan
