Beijing Status?

Tue Oct 22, 2002 12:15 pm

I'll be in Beijing on 11/9-10 and was wondering if anyone on the forum can provide an update on photography there? Is the famous 36L shot still an option? Any hints are welcome.

Hi BH,

I was in Beijing last week and was lucky to have got in. Presently, the haze and smog is awful and the visibility was varying between 200-2000 metres. I took some shots but I did not submit them because I'm sure smog bound airports are of little interest.

The famous spotting place on the bridge beside the taxiway was open but the 36L position I can't confirm.

If you'd like a pic of how bad it was let me know and I'll email one off.

Cheers.

Hi Bill

From what I heard 3 spotter went spotting in PEK last week, the holding point 36L is still open, but they have removed all the dirt/grass/bushes to the right hand side of it, and make way of 12 stands for cargo plane and the concrete is already finish there. They told me it is now probably the last couple weeks to still ok to get in. there are 2 more gates built before the road leads to the holding point spot, but gates are open so far. (one can imagine if gates are closed, then the spot is no more accessible, this being the main issue)

For the 1st time, I also heard they reported police hassel spotter there, but may be this is due to some misunderstanding. Normally they are used to the photographer and lens.

I haven't been back since March this yr, but I believe much have changed except traffic still interesting. Also spot for afternoon on 18R (landing rwy) is very good, you simply walk towards left from 36L holding point, youre slightly elevated and stand on top of a ditch looking down. There are lots of clear days but when there is no wind, it can be hazey, October is typically a bad month, smog, fog and haze. But when it is too windy, sandstorm are possible too. Good LUCK

Thank you both for your responses. I guess I'll have to see what happens when I get there. And, Ejazz, please post or send that hazy photo. The smog/haze comments are noted. I had the same problems 8 years ago when I was there photographing trains.

Hence the name "Monsoon Boy"... with you gone for two weeks at least the WX here in NYC should be nice and sunny. Feel sorry for the PEK spotters though... two weeks of clouds and rain are coming starting this weekend.  Big grin

wow, and I hope this Monsoon Boy is not going PEK via Tokyo NRT, heard few guys from Europe, US are going there 1-2 weeks from now. I will be heading there for my first D100 shot too!  Smile The yellow Disney is finishing 9Jan03, and Disney Sea non winglets version JA8905 is finishin 23/Nov, last chance.

Also try to explore the other Rwy in PEK, 36R/18L, it is possible to make good approach photos on 36R if 36L holding point is closed, at least I have been told a friend with Rob Finlayson there 2 weeks ago.

Sam, forget about it. The region is going to be turning to sh$t this Friday when Bill is in the air on his way west. You guys might as well put your cameras away. Clouds, rain, thunderstorms...it's all coming. We are just happy he won't be around so we can finally get some sun  Smile

Sam:

Thanks for the head's up re: approach shots. That's the plan if 36L is closed, and it's sunny. Let's hope it doesn't rain.
