Compare Your First A.net Photo With Your Latest.

Tue Oct 22, 2002 6:25 pm

This is mainly just for fun, but it could perhaps show how you as a photographer has improved since your first picture on a.net.

Being the ego-maniac I am, I'll go first:

What has changed? Well, I got hold of a digital camera for one. That is definetly a quality improvement. Stnadards are much higher now, so it makes sence that the newest additions are better looking than the old ones.

Right, your turn.  Smile

The first pic was taken with my Canon EOS 30 and I think it was a negative scan. The latest pic was taken with my Sony F707.

BTW: My first slide scan uploaded here was my 3rd pic accepted. I still remember, how impressed I was with that deep blue sky.

Ok...my turn. This looks like fun.

Before I get to the shots though I'll say this, and this is directed at everyone who is still fairly new to this hobby.

There was a time when what I now know to be seriously soft and really quite horrid shots really did look, to my then untrained eye, damn sharp! I look at them now and cringe. Those shots obviously aren't here to view and it was some time before I had my first shot accepted. I used to get pretty mad at the constant rejections but with time I got there...now approaching 600 shots in the database.

I suppose the message is that we all improve over time and if you are prepared to spend a little time and to listen to advice available from many here (special thanks here to Gary Watt who helped me enormously in those early days!) then you will eventually reach the required standard.

I still have bad days when I just delete a shot in disgust after trying to get it just right in PhotoShop...but these days I just relax and move on to the next shot - some shots just weren't meant to be.

Ok...I've bored you enough...now for the killer blow...

My first shot on the left taken back in March 2000 and scanned from a slide (don't remember what brand but probably Fuji Sensia), the most recent on the right, D60 digital  Big thumbs up

This was my first shot on airliners.net - it was the first picture I ever tried to upload and it got accepted - thats been a hard act to follow! At the time it was uploaded, it was also the first pic of DC-8 HB-IGH on the database:

Photo © Andy Martin

One and a half years and 801 photos later, here's my latest on the database. Another first, this was the first picture of G-OBMP in BMIBaby colours, and also the first picture of the "Extra Terrestrial" logo-jet:

Photo © Andy Martin

One thing that strikes me immediately... In the year and a half or so that I have been uploading pictures to this site, the number of photographs in the database has doubled - around 142,000 to 287,000. If the number of submissions keeps increasing at the rate it has been doing, I wouldn't be surprised to see the site reach half a million pictures in the next year and a half.

I am now trying to get two planes through the moon because I think some may start to get tired of seeing the same type of moon silhoutte....
Last night in Boston, one plane (DC-9) climbing out of 4ooo feet was "in" the moon and a departing MD-80 was climbing out of 1500 feet and was "exiting" the moon....SO frustrating! One more second is all I needed..The photo shows the higher DC-9 "in" the top half of the moon and only the tail of the MD-80 with the rest of the fuselage "out" of the moon...UGHHHH!

Differences are only in film and scanner.
I've not become a better photographer (don't need to  Innocent) but I've exchanged amateur printfilm and a cheapo slidescanner for professional slidefilm and a midrange slidescanner (though the CRJ was taken on amateur slidefilm I tried as an experiment).

This is an interesting thread. A lot of you guys had very good pics for your first ones..obviously you've been around a camera before coming to airliners.net As for me, well I really had litte to none experience with shooting before I got my first ones accepted. All I knew was "point the camera and shoot it".

One of the earliest ones:

Photo © Bruce Leibowitz

Gravelly Point is good to shoot at, but if only I was on the sunny side of the plane and had it more centered I could have had a good shot. This pic was taken in the morning hours, facing north, so the light would have been excellent especially with the clear blue sky on that fall day. Also, that pic was re-scanned last year on a good quality scanner and its quality still falls way short of the digital one below....

A recent one:

Photo © Bruce Leibowitz

Now I'm on the correct side of the plane to get the best light, and at the right time of day (late), and shoot it dead on center, AND i have a digital camera. That's the formula!

Well, I think I have made improvements. I can still make more though. I love taking night shots and they are becoming fun. I love Biz Jets now, so since I work with them, I have a good chance of taking photos like this more. I have evolved to a Sony -F707 from a Minolta Maxxum, So the difference is there.

Thanks

At present these are my latest photos, but it shows something which is rather important when it comes to photography these days: Nice weather conditions. I'm sure nobody will argue with me when I say that the weeather often decide whether a picture looks nice or not.  Smile

My first one is from a badly scratched print that was accepted in Jan 2001, photo taken July 1979. (still the only photo of this in the db in Delta c/s):

My latest that was accepted a week or so ago was taken 23 years after the first, in Jul 2002.
