I Urgently Need Help With Lhr!

Wed Oct 23, 2002 3:18 am

Last Friday I went to Hatton Cross with some rolls of Provia 100F to get some pics but noticed that the runway at that place was used for takeoffs and this was no use for me. I tried to walk to the parallel runway but I got a bit lost and I ended up with no photos and many rolls that needed to be placed in the refrigirator again! I need help. I searched for some LHR maps but the distancesare very big and I will probably get lost if I attempt to walk around the airport again. Are there any standard days and hours when I can get approach shots from Hatton Cross? I also noticed that there are some pedestrian bridges over the roads near Cross. Is it ok to stand there or will I get in trouble (police etc)? Finally I would like to know if 135mm will do the job because I am seriously thinking of buying a longer lens.

Thanks for any replies. I will try again this weekend so I appreciate any feedback.

Lewis,
when the runways being used are the 27s(ie what was happening when you were there)the planes will land on 1 runway until 3pm and then they will switch over and use the other and same with takeoffs obviously.
For 27L I would advise you cross the dual carriageway next to Hatton X and turn right towards the petrol station.Keep walking past this for about 5 minutes and you will come to an open field-a great spot for 27L approach shots.
To get to 27R from Hatton X cross onto the big roundabout near the foot bridge and then cross over again heading North and follow the road that lots of cars will be going down which passes the area BA keep their narrowbody fleet.Walk for about 5minutes and you will come to the 27R approach.Which way did you go?
Cheers,Alex

I think I reached a road near maintenance but I gave up because I couldn't see any aircraft approaching and I thought I lost my way. I hope that I will see other A.net members! It will be boring to be alone out there.

BTW, should I be careful about thieves? That place didn't really seem very safe...

Lewis:

I went to LHR last Sunday, and had no problem finding out the runways in use (09L for landings and 09R for takeoffs all day instead of landings on 27L until 3PM and then switch to 27R; but my aircraft still landed on 27L but 30m later or so they switched to 09L).

There is no need to actually walk around the airport. There are several buses that drive around the whole airport during the day, e.g. 285 to Hatton Cross and H30 to BA Waterside (what an amazing complex, I must admit!). And they are all for free (well, most of them are, I had to pay nothing for those buses).

So, you shouldn't actually walk around the airport, just exit the terminal (1,2 or 3 probably) and go to the central bus station (well, this depends where you're coming from, but it seems you're from Greece, but maybe you're spending some time in England?).

Anyway, just look for the topic I started a week ago or something about my visit to LHR together with Turbotrent and you'll find some good hyperlinks!

Not that I am much help, but I spent about 3 hours on the pedestrian bridge at Hatton Cross back in AUgust. Took lots of photos and never had a comment from anyone. (Probably one of the least used bridges in the world!!)  Smile

I now live in the UK as a student so I will arrive at Hatton Cross by tube. Thanks for all the useful information! Now I know that the buses are free so I wont get lost again!

Lewis:

Most of the buses have are free up to a certain point, from which you will have to pay. But you shouldn't have any difficulties getting around the airport for free.
