Pricing Of Sigma SD9

Fri Oct 25, 2002 12:50 am

The SD9 is released this week with a UK price tag of £1299.
This looks like Sigma's way of getting in on the market. I assume that they are selling the camera as cheaply as possible knowing that they will get their margin back on the lenses, as this uses Sigma mount.

I still do not regret buying into the EOS system as I have a nice collection of lenses for my EOS30 (including L series) which I can complement with a digital body when I am ready.

To anyone looking at a first SLR system though this is tempting, as it is priced about the same as an EOS30 body and mid-range slide scanner.

The test shots at dpreview are stunning.

Regards,
Craig.

This is very tempting, I also understand that the SD9 is the first full-frame DSLR...is this true? If so its attractive as the multiplier of other DSLR's may be great for some things...but not so great when it comes to small focal lengths.

Does anyone have a link to a review/test images from the SD9 I can't find a review on dpreview.com

SD9 is NOT full-frame. It has a smaller sensor than even the D30, with a 1.7x "crop" factor. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing when it comes to aviation photography. I'll agree that the images look pretty good, although I have no idea how the body works overall nor how the AF is. Also, I was a little concerned about the ISO 400 noise performance, and I'm not all that excited about investing in Sigma lenses. On the other hand, if I were starting out at zero and I was itching to get a DSLR this would not be a bad alternative.
