New York Area Spotters...Who Are You?

Fri Oct 25, 2002 7:56 am

I know that there are many spotters from the Tri-State Area. We all know of Yevgeny, Tom, Joe and Carlos. Who else is from the Tri-State Area that isnt quite so famous?

Mike McLaughlin, Bill Hough, Art Brett and Mark Bess are all NYC area a.net photogs that come to mind... also Guido "Fleet Boy" Latz who's an honorary member of the NYC clan.  Big grin
Guido spent about 4 years living here in NJ fleeting everything in sight @ EWR/JFK/LGA/PHL, but now his job sent him back home in FRA.

Yes, that's right Raj and Phil too (haven't met LGA Phil yet). But the others I don't think have pics on a.net that I know of.
If "AA 777" means non-a.net photogs too then the list is endless...

Also forgot another NYC a.netter... Leigh Miller from NJ.

Matt- then you qualify as a "NYC a.netter" too!  Big grin
Your profile says your 13-15 years old... with shot like the ones you've uploaded thus far I'd say your on the right track with your photo skills at such a young age. Keep up the nice work...

The dock is by far the greatest non-tresspassing spot in NYC.

pdernerjr@hotmail.com to learn more, or check out Tom Turner's grat shots (and even mine under "Phil Derner Jr.) to get an idea.

Well I am not a NY area spotter...But I will be in NY in February thanks to the great customer service at SOuthwest Airlines...(broke their airplane 3 times on a trip we were taking...Turned a 70 minute flight into 8 hours....SO they gave us 3 passes where ever they fly...not a bad deal. )

ANyway....Are there good spotting locations which are available to me without having a car? (I would rather not rent a car in the city...) Any info appreciated.

2912n,

If you want to spot at JFK or LGA I would say that it would be best to rent a car.

I am from the NYC area (SW Connecticut), but I don't go spotting that often. When I get a digital camera (hopefully soon), I hope to do more aviation photography and spotting. As of now, I take most of my pictures at airshows or during trips.

2912n:

Take it from a NY'er w/o a car; you definately do not need to rent a car for spotting. LGA is by far the easiest airport to spot at, with some really great spots. All you'll need is a metrocard (preferably a $4 fun pass). JFK gets a little more tricky for spotting w/o a car, but it can be done (it's long to get to) by taking public transportation and then the JFK shuttle bus. IF you need any help, you can contact me, and I can give you some good spots etc...
A lot will just depend on runway utilization...

Whenever I am visiting in the New York Area I try and do some spotting and photography. I've been to Islip, Westchester, Newark, LGA, JFK, Newburgh, and Poughipsee back when they had commutair 1900's. How is spotting these days in the area, post 9/11? It's bad in Boston, last time I went they booted me out and threatened arrest.

Airplanekid2:

At LGA it's pretty lax. If you're not on airport property, no one can really do anything to you, and even if people come over to you, unless you look arab, if you're up front with them, they're usually cool. (i.e. the dock is on a concrete site and no one has ever said anything)...

At JFK, you run into many more difficulties. I was kicked off the roof of DL's parking lot, and I've heard about people getting kicked out of the customs area etc...

... me  Smile

I live in Morris County, New Jersey.. so obviously, EWR is my primary spot, but JFK is in the mix too.

LGA... ick.. only the shopping center will I dare and fight it. Although when they come in low over Northern Blvd. it is incredible!!

JBLUA320:

You should come out to LGA, and check out some of the spots mentioned on the site before. I assume you've been to planeview, but there is also "the dock" which Phil and I discovered, which offers a great view of 13/31 traffic....

You guys are making me home sick!! I grew up on the threshold of runway's 22R & 22L. When I'm back home in NYC, I generally spot from my Mom's front yard when a/c land on 22L & I get to see how dirty they are when they land on 22R @ JFK since they fly directly over the house. If you go to the parking lot at Costco near Rockaway Blvd, you can get good shots of a/c landing on 31R. Also if you survey the neighborhood in Rochdale you can find corners that are not obstructed by trees and you can get good shots when they land on 22R & 22L. You might get some crazy looks from people living in the area. Nuts Unfortunately, gone are the days when you could pull over on Rockaway Blvd. and practically "FEEL THE SENSATION" of a/c landing on 22R & 22L!! Ah,those were the good old days Crying

Mike, I didn't think that you could pull over nowadays with the heighten alert for terrorism. I didn't want to take a chance. There were times when I was home I would drive on Rockaway and didn't see anyone on the side of the road. Which side are you able to pull over w/o being harrased, east bound towards LI or west bound towards Jamaica? Thanks for the heads up.

Zebfly2,

That would be South/SE bound on Rockaway Turnpike on the right side of the road in the direction towards Five Towns. You cannot pull off anywhere going the North/NW bound.

Correction on the neighborhood that you can get excellent views of a/c landing on 22L & 22R. It's Rosedale not Rochdale(where my ex-girl friend lived) Embarrassment

Mirrodie,

A NYC meet up in the spring would be sweet. Does it have to be in the spring or can we have one in the winter...You know the skies are always crisp blue in the winter.

keep updating!

Well.. if you live in the city you could always take the Subway to Penn and then take the Newark Airport connector. Surprisingly enough the monorail affords some excellent views.

Then again, keep price in mind.

Estimate Prices (dont remember exact ones):
______________________________________
Newark Airport- NY Penn (or vice-versa) ONE WAY:

Amtrak: 16.00
NJ Transit: 12.00
______________________________________
The prices are pretty ridiculous. From my hometown train station of Morris Plains, NJ, a roundtrip peak fare to the city is less then Amtrak's one way.

Just goes to show ya that New Jersey is full of New York prices  Smile Smile

Have your parents and mine been talking. Although they are more concerned about me being "takin advantage off."
