Since When Do Special Pics Get Rejected?

Sat Nov 16, 2002 9:56 am

Hi,

last Tuesday, I read somewhere that past Wednesday would be the last day that 4 Virgin Express aircraft would wear temporary 'Q Airlines' titles, celebrating the first anniversary of Q Music, a Belgian radio station.

Now, to make sure that this website would at least have 1 (!) single picture of these aircraft, I drove to the airport and took a few pics of those aircraft.

I know, the weather was bad and so, but this was the very last opportunity I ('we') had to catch those birds wearing those temporary stickers (well, I haven't been able to check it).

Here you can see the pics (click on image to see full 1024x768 image):

I know, the quality isn't 100%. But I was trying to do this site a favor and add a couple of special pictures to it's enormous database (especially the last one, I think this one's quality is the best).

But, all pics were rejected, and even the appeal function didn't help much. Johan rejected all four of them. They even didn't accept the last picture, a picture whose quality I think is rather acceptable for this special subject.

But hey, guess there's nothing I can do about it huh? If anybody'd like to have those please download them or send me an email.

Oh yeah. I don't mean anything bad with this. I just think maybe this is a missed opportunity for a site like this. But hey, life goes on. I have them Big grin

Or, if anybody should have some comment on how to improved them (especially the last one), met me know...

Ivan,

I like them, but I think the weather was pretty shitty...
Typical Belgian!

Hey don't give up! Try it again, fine-tune in PShop.

Good luck,

Ivan if you get a chance to get some side-on kodachrome slides of this airplane in sun i'll take a roll of 36 and i'll give you 50 euros for it. Let me know.

This plane was here at Faro, I didn't pay too much attention while it was parked at stand because I thought it would continue painted like this for some monthes and now you're telling it was just until last wednesday?  Sad I'm not into trading slides but if I knew it, I could have made some perfect 50mm side profiles under sun for Joe, and for me  Sad

today I got to slum in on the Copa 737 delivery ceremony for a plane celebrating 100 years of Panama, wearing special paint. The weather was shite but I busted a few off, but none of the screeners cared (I sent an email)  Smile

being on the Boeing flightline today was insane. I saw some cool shiz....including the GE 747 test bed. I got some great shots of the Ryanair CEO clowing around, plus I was the only one on a brand new 738 for over 20 minutes.

Sitting in the drivers seat was huge. I was like a kid in a candystore.

Joe , Peter and I might be going to BRU next weekend or whenever the weather is ok, possibly with rampaccess. IF we get the opportunity to shoot it I'll do a roll for you.

Joe: Thanks for the support. I know, the last one looks nice, when you consider the conditions. But hey, I still don't have the ability to scare all the clouds away and take out the sun you know.

Anyway, I'm driving to the airport within 30 minutes or so, and let's hope for some sunny weather and that one of the aircrafts still has the special markings.

Timdegroot: How do you guys get ramp access? Big grin

Ivan, as is said "possibly with rampaccess" , so nothing is confirmed yet.
But my father know the right people in the right places, so usually that gets the job done at most airports. Then again BRU has some excellent outside spots so I won't be miserable when we don't get access Smile
Joe will tell you also, it's all about who you know in this hobby.

Timdegroot: Yup, I know Big grin

Anyway, the photos were rejected because of low quality. This afternoon, I drove back to BRU to shoot TV737 coming from LIN, but man, the weather was even worse than last wednesday: visibility of about 1km! Fog all the way...

But, anyway, this aircraft was still wearing Q Airliners titles. That's the good news! So, guess we'll just have to wait for some sunny weather. But, and that's the bad news, I don't think we'll have good sunny weather over here at BRU for the first couple of days  Sad

Guess the screeners have finally stopped replying to these type of posts, like they said they were going to. I've noticed this lately. At least one should have been added, being that it is rare. Guess you didn't get that one screener who loves to check the database to see how rare (common) something is.  Big grin Bad move on the screeners part not taking at least one, and I guess we won't hear their side of the story...

Apparently a.net doesn't want to be anymore a 'complete-database'?

Those are the first, and probably the last pictures that will be uploaded from this plane with Q-Music Airlines stickers.

The quality is certainly ok (sad about the sky, but it could be much more worse, quality is still very good).

Very strange they were not accepted...

BTW: why do the screeners not reply anymore to this kind of topics? I think that this is not a normal 'why not accepted' thread, it goes about special aircrafts which are not added to the database anymore apparently...

NonRevKing and Sabena 690:

Thanks for the support! Yes it's true. I'd like to hear something from the screeners as well. But however, I don't want to become one of those guys over here that have a certain 'reputation' and jeopardise the upload of future pictures.

But once again, I also think one should have been uploaded (preferably the last one - I think it has acceptable image quality). Or if one of the screeners could give me some sort of advice on how to improve them...

Or maybe someone else would like to improve it? If you'd like I can upload the original Img_0011.jpg to my webspace and if you'd like you can try to get it better?

Why do the screeners not reply anymore to this kind of topics?

There's no point in the screeners responding to this topic - you've provided the answer yourself...

Even the appeal function didn't help much. Johan rejected all four of them.

But I'll tell you why the screeners don't tend to respond to this type of topic anymore...

A year ago, the screening / acceptance process was very closed - very little in the way of explanation, very little in the way of feedback (no criticism of those involved at the time intended).

We tried to change things, we tried to make the process more transparent by explaining what happens, how judgments are made, etc. We hoped that this would reduce the number of critical topics, on the basis that photographers should be better informed, know what was expected, and how judgments were made. However, the end result of this policy of making things more open was a large increase in the amount of aggressive or critical screening/process topics on this forum. What actually happened, in effect, was that there was a huge growth in the "armchair screener" syndrome - photographers who thought they knew what was going on trying to out-judge or out-maneuver the screening and appeals process.

For a long while, we tried to deal with these topics by trying to respond positively and constructively, but a fair number of our attempts at this just resulted in more criticism. So we've reached the situation we are now in. I am not singling out those involved in this topic as the only culprits, but there is a process for dealing with rejected pictures, and that is to appeal. Clearly in this case, the appeal has failed and therefore all this topic does is further encourage this "armchair screening" syndrome - effectively, its just adding fuel to the "we know better than the screeners" (or indeed more than the editor in chief) thing.

Please note that there is no absolute policy of screeners not responding to topics in the forum, but if there is a general perception that screeners nolonger reply to these topics, then you now know why - lack of motivation to do so based on us having tried before, and having found it achieved nothing.

Skymonster:

Thanks for your honest answer. Please don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to be aggressive or so, certainly not. In fact I wasn't trying to take down the screeners.

I was asking the forum members for their opinion about the rejected pictures, and ask them for some good advice. I really think that it would be good for A.net to have at least one picture of those aircraft with their special markings. I even don't care wether it's mine or not.

So, at this moment I'm trying to improve the quality of the pictures I took so at least one of the pictures will make it to the database.

If the weather here should increase (no sun these past 2 days whatsoever, only low visibility  Sad ) I'll go back to BRU and try to shoot one of those 4 birds. Let's hope they still wear these stickers by then. If not, too bod for the database I think. But hey, I'll have them in my own personal collection, and that is what counts most for me!

Thanks to Frederic Backaert aka Sabena 690 for trying to improve this picture. Let's hope this one makes it. We'll see, right?

Thanks for your answer, Andy, and I understand your point of view.

Anyway, it is still a fact that I did not see any criticism here in this thread... Ivan asked a normal question that deserves a normal answer. If the topic would have been something like ''hey screeners, what is wrong with it, why don't you just accept it huh? Picture is ok, so why don't you do it; are you boycotting me maybe???'' I would immediately ask for deletion, but I think that in this topic absolutely no offence is included towards Johan and the screeners.

Regards,
Frederic

Ivan and others,

It seems that OO-LTL and OO-LTU will wear the Q-Music stickers for another two weeks. I hope you can nail them in excellent weather conditions  Wink/being sarcastic, but it looks like we have to wait at least some days...

Ebos:

Thanks for the information. I'll definitely do my best, especially since I currently have been hired by a cargo company as airport dispatcher (really not that big 'aviation' deal, but I'm very close to the airport: Brucargo  Wink/being sarcastic )

I'll try to shoot it, maybe even this week. But of course, we'll need some good weather. And it has been kind of foggy for these past few days now around BRU.

So, all we can do is hope for some sunny weather  Big thumbs up

It is a unique photo. That is all it is. All unique photos should be uploaded. It is a special livery, a special plane photo should be honored as such. Like this photo

Don't worry! I've posted in this forum myself in the past asking why this image has so many hits. I have no idea!

More than likely this image is probably linked to some other page on the web which is generating lots of traffic (hits).

Sort of like this page link below... if you go to that page and down a little before half way you'll see some links for a.net SMX shots which just happen to be "heavy hitters" too. The links for some a.net shots don't always come from a.net itself but via a 3rd party (middleman site)...

Funny, I liked the first two best. I don't see what's wrong with any of them, or indeed the difference between the original version of the 4th one and the version that got accepted. But at least you got one finally.

Bwc1976: The final version of the 4th one is brighter, a bit sharper and the red comes out better...
