Help For These 4 Pics

Fri Nov 22, 2002 3:38 am

I just had a batch of seven photos rejected, and there are four in particular that I would like some help on:

http://airliners.net/procphotos/rejphoto.main?filename=AV20021018n3767.jpg

The shots were rejected for "blurry or unsharp" as well as "badcontrast." The contrast I can fix, but I thought these were sharp enough. Any help would be appreciated. This was my first foray into K64 territory, and they sure are more challenging to scan!

They have a lot of contrast! See how the wing is totally black. Try to manipulate the levels of the photos.

Yup. Best thing to do is try to reduce the contrast. These pictures are almost hurting my eyes Big grin Sorry. But, anyway, there really is way topo much contrast. It's either black or light.

Yeah, fix the contrast on those. On a side note, what scanner are you using? Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. I know that contrast is indeed a problem with these, but they were also kicked back for sharpness, and I thought they were fairly sharp. To answer your question, Justin, I use a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II. This is my first time scanning Kodachrome, and I'm finding that it requires a little more work to get a good scan than the Fuji I usually use.

On a side note, any tips for scanning Kodachrome using Vuescan?

Michael, I sometimes get better results scanning K64 in Vuescan if I don't use the Kodachrome option, I find that it sometimes induces too much noise in the shadow areas. Instead I get better shadowdetail but there can be a colour cast that I correct in PS.

Ok, what version of Vuescan do you have, because mine doesn't seem to have a Kodachrome option. I've read other comments that refer to it, but I can't seem to find it on my version. The only time it lets me select different film types is when I scan print film. That option goes away when I scan slide film.

Never mind, I found the Kodachrome setting... Embarrassment
