Stunning 777 Flightdeck Picture

While browsing through some of the latest additions to the database, I saw this amazing picture of a Varig 777 cockpit:

I think this really is an amazing flightdeck picture. I mean, the outside scenery comes out really well (not overexposed), and the flightdeck has been clearly lit as well!

It almost has something 'unnatural', don't you think? I wonder how long it's going to take before somebody shows up stating that this one has to be you-know-what  Wink/being sarcastic

Most of the time, photographers tend to overexpose the outside scenery in order to get a good picture of the flightdeck, or they underexpose the flightdeck to get a good view of the scenery. Of course, we all know this is mainly due to the very difficult (lighting) circumstances under wich one has to take pictures over there...

This one is a bit different than the usual cockpit shots. Nice one!

At first I thought this was very good bounce flash off the roof with the main exposure coming off the outside. However, having read the guy's comment I'm not so sure. Look at the pilots' shirts - no detail at all. What I suspect is that the exposure was correct for the outside and the interior was dark. By masking off the outsides, you can bring the white point down for the interior and make it seem as bright as it is. Snag is that all the pure white areas lose all their variation. Notice how the switches and knobs have lost their texture as well as the pilotsd' shirts.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the shot it's excellent. Just trying to guess how it was done. Perhaps Paulo can tell us if he reads this forum.

Jason I'm obviously not an expert but I think its just a sync-flash. Seriously, just looks like it was a built-in cameraflash, and its slightly over exposed and thats how the photo was taken!

Then again, I'm probably completely wrong. Big grin

Hi guys,

Here is a message from the guy who took this special picture, Paulo Herren, in which he reveals the technical details of shooting this image:

" Hello guys, I am writing this note trough Ivan so that there are no more doubts about the shot...

Firstly, I must say that EGGD is right, in spite of the fact that he is not quite sure about that...The fact is that I knew I would not have much time to try 1, 2 or 3 shots...We held short on the runway waiting an Archer land...I asked the Captain if I could use a flash bacause I didn't want to get the pilots scared
during the take-off due to an unexpected light...He said it was Ok, so I switched the flash on...I considered some points when thinking about using the flash or not:

-I already know by past experiences that cockpit shots are very likely to get very overexposed or blurry if a flesh is not used...The better thing to do is to use a tripod (Note: there is a board in the center jump seat of the T7 that I am sure that it was projected by some spotter that works at Boeing, because it is in the center of the cockpit, in a nice distance...Check this: ) However, as I use a digital camera, I also wanted to film the take-off, so I wanted to take the pic quickly and then switch to cam recorder mode, what I fortunately accomplished very well...It is very nice to hear Mr. Boeing shouting "V1"...If anyone wants the movie, please, contact me on my ICQ 94981212 and I will be happy to send you.

-I already knew that the plane would shake a little bit, making the non-flash photos even worse!!!For you to have an idea, when I boarded the plane with the F/O, I realized that the plane was moving from side to side...I thought some minutes about this and then asked the F/O if it was what I was thinking...And yes, he confirmed to me that, even parked at the gate, the plane was moving from side to side due to the strong winds that day!!!And also, I know that neither the runway and neither the taxiway are very leveled, and it made the shots also very dificult...

-I use an Fuji FinePix 2800Zoom...This camera has very nice points, but also some bad features...The major problem about it is that it doesn't have much manual control...The only thing you can set is the White Balance, and all the rest is automated...I can't complain about the camera, I am very satisfied with it because of its zoom and its cost...But the truth is that I don't really know what the machine is doing, I just point and shoot, So I there are some times that I cannot take riscs, I must do what I know that you work Ok!!!

For all this points, I decided that using flash would be the best thing to do...Even in flight it was a bit hard taking non-flash pics, due to a light turbulence and, during the approach, to the use of the spoilers, and when the Captain asked for "Gear Down" I gave up...

Considering all this, I am truly happy, very satisfied with the shot...In the original version, the cockpit is brighter, but photoshop helped a little!!!Even using the flash, the EFIS is visible...It is not very bright, but it is visible...
