Spotting & Photography On CBS News

Tue Dec 03, 2002 2:28 pm

Did anyone see this? On tonight's CBS Evening News here in the USA they did a story related to the recent attack on the Israeli jetliner. Their subject was, "could it happen here". In the report they showed video from DFW and DCA - showed the spotting areas and what seemed like lots of people in cars watching the planes. I assume the DFW video was shot from the Founders Plaza? It looked like there was a fence seperating the cars and the airport grounds/runway. And of course DCA with people walking in the park (Gravelly Point) as planes swing in low overhead for the river approach.

Their story pointed out that these shoulder-fired rocket launchers are mostly old Soviet stock and require quite a bit of training and luck to fire it properly. The FBI has warned airports to "be aware" of the danger but no mention was made of banning the public from public areas near airports, like viewing areas.

I doubt anything like that would happen here. if any airports have closed viewing areas because of it, then it's just a knee-jerk reaction and, like CLT after 9/11, things will eventually return to calm. Same goes for Europe, but I think it's more dangerous over there.

From the looks of the DFW portion of the video, it looks like a place I'd love to visit!!!!!

You can watch the video from CBS news website: (scroll down the right side to "video")

I saw the same report and drew the same conclusion. Still there will be those out there who will see the report who are (or were) completly un-aware of these observation areas and demand that they be shut down. Hopefully they will be far and few between. As Sunil recently reported in a previous thread on a similar topic, when the Washighton Post profied a few D.C. area spotters sometime back, a few readers were upset that these groups existed and actually believed that they posed a threat.

I take it that there hasn't been any issues with spotters/photographers getting hassled or anything at DFW's Founders Plaza? I guess all shooting is done thru a fence (no photo holes?) so how does that work out?

Let me tell you, I have some time off work this month and I was thinking of a trip down to florida but now with FLL closed Texas is looking very promising. I'd save some time to make a drive up to DFW if I go.
