Fuji Finepix 3800/S304

Sat Dec 28, 2002 1:29 am

 Smile Hi everyone!  Smile

I recently posted here asking for advice on which camera to buy, (as many of you may know) but I still haven't found one that matches my needs.

Ok, I went to jessops, picked up a Fujifilm S304 and took some pictures with it - overall quality of pictures was good, but the zoom was terrible!
Whenever I zoomed in, the LCD was totally out of focus and I couldn't see what I was taking a picture of. I said no to that camera as it didn't focus AT ALL. I have been looking at some others and read some posts on here about this camera - and then I though I may have been given a faulty camera because if all the S304's were like this then they wouldn't sell would they?
I've seen it at http://www.amazon.co.uk for £329.99 (about $400) which is pretty good. Should I order one and see if the zoom is the same as the one at jessops?
If you have a S304/Finepix 3800 please let me have a look at some images that you have taken with it and let me know how your focus is.

Thanks for all your replies!
Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Just in case you didn't know, the Fuji needs to be re-focused after zooming, it is not automatic. Zoom to where you want to be, half-press the shutter button to focus and set the exposure. I have a Fuji 2800 (same camera, less pixels) and know that you have to re-focus after changing the focal length.

It takes wonderful pictures of things on the ground, not as wonderful for aircraft in the sky. If you want pictures of static aircraft on the ramp it will do fine.

I just bought that exact camera yesterday! I've tried it out quite extensively over the past day and a half...its pretty good...its actually a bargain. The one thing that drew me to it was the quick shutter speed, its pretty close to a 35mm. Youll be hard pressed to find a camera with that kind of zoom, and shutter speed for $399. The Olympus C720/730 have 8x zoom, but the shutter lag is awful!

The focussing is really not a problem---all you have to do is pick out the target and follow it, it may not appear to be focused, all you may see is a black shadowy looking thing in the viewfinder, but the pics turn out fine! Thanks for the tip Jeff about clicking before I take the pic (I never read manuals)!

Its totally worth it! I'll be glad to send you some pics that I have taken if you want them! Big grin

So if I understood correctly I Can set focus on this camera on some point and then take a picture when a plane passes that point so I have already good focus for that distance?
And another question how is zooming and focusing done plus/minus buttons or rotating a ring as on older cameras?
(I prefer rotating, I hate pressing button and then finishing up at the end of scale)
