Should I Cancel My Trip To FLL/MIA This Month?

Fri Jan 03, 2003 1:48 pm

I had planned on taking the third week off of work to go down to FLL and MIA. I have been trying to get down there the past few years. I've never been there before. I was really looking forward to visiting these two airports...then I heard about the lot closure at FLL.

Should I still go or save the FF miles? I want quality photography spots (I'm not interested in just spotting). Any close up spots remaining at FLL or MIA? Whenever I visit a new airport I usually know somebody from the area that I can contact for information, but I honestly don't know anyone from the area. I'm just wondering if I should save this trip for next year (though things can only get worse...maybe this is the best it's going to be for a while).

MIA reportedly still OK (photo holes and El Dorado), FLL obviously less so though I believe that the parking garage at FLL is still OK (not "close up" there though). No doubt some further reports about the situation at MIA will emerge over the next week or so as the annual slide trading convention takes place there next week.

MIA is very much open for photography. For the past several weeks there are 8-10 people on the weekends at the photography holes at 9L/12, the authorities have not been any problem. On the other side I have heard that the Eldorado area is also OK, if you are lucky and there are no boxcars.

I don't frequent FLL much, but as other discussions here have indicated, the holes are gone and the old parking area closed. It looks like the parking garage is the only option there.

Mark, I know I'll be there and Brian might as well. It'd be nice to meet up again.
I'll arrive on Friday and leave on Sunday. Along with many other photogrtaphers, there will also be a ramp tour of MIA on Saturday.

Drop me an email and I'll give you the info.

i'll probably be spending some time up on the FLL pkg deck shooting digital- no matter which operation the airport is on, you get great shots- its a win/win situation.

I'll have the tickets if you don't want them Big grin

Anyway, it's your choice, if you want to go, then go, but see if other people can help you with the spotting places.

Seems like a lot of other spotters will be there too.

Myself and about 5 other people I know will be there, should be a blast this year (even without the FLL viewing lot). I am more interested in shooting at the holes in MIA anyways.

i'll be joining the crowd down at MIA this year also with a buddy of mine....it's a bummer what's happened at FLL and i would've liked to do some shooting there but then again MIA isn't such a bad place either and i'll be content with doing most of my shooting there

I have just returned from a week at MIA, did not run into any problems at all. Holes adjacent to the Customs bldg. are still available with a nice sign on the fence that states "Photography allowed in this area only, ladders prohibited". This makes it an officially sanctioned area for photography, though a ladder would have been nice for some arrivals. There are now 5 "official" holes and 6 other holes available. I did have a very minor problem at El Dorado, police have apparently been asked by the store to enforce their lots "no parking" signs, officer just asked me to move my vehicle onto the street at the deadend barrier and I never got bothered again. The biggest problem encountered the whole time were the trains that kept parking on the tracks at this location.
FLL's lot was still closed, tried the 7th floor of the parking garage, but you will need about 400 mm for arrival/departures. You can get shots of JetBlue and Continental going to and from their gates directly below you with normal lenses however.

Say no to MIA never! I just have a fabulous time there, you can also get to know all the good gangs in MIA, they have some unbeliavable collection and appetite in eating terms!!!  Big grin

I just uploaded a few slides shots from MIA taken 2 weeks ago! I thought MIA was excellent still except bit quiet, but thats happening in LAX and many places too.

I have heard mixed things about FLL's status...one person has told that it was gone forever while another has told me that it was to reopen on Jan 1...so frankly I dont know whats going on, I will not be in South Florida again for another two weeks...Ill look into it then...

Agh!! I didn't know the gathering was next weekend! I definately want to go know. There's a lot of people I have been wanting to meet and some people I want to see again. Unfortunately, Northwest has Florida blacked out for most travel dates at this time. I'm going to have to see what I can do to get there.

Where is everyone staying? Close to MIA or FLL?

I should know if I can attend either today or tomorrow. It all depends what I can do with from FF miles from Northwest and/or some unused tickets on ATA...

7-11 are the dates (I believe), I plan on being there 10-12th though with a few other people. I am flying into FLL (I live in Orlando...I probably should have drove...but where's the fun in that  Laugh out loud ) and probably get a hotel in the FLL area. How's OPF these days? Can you still walk in?

If the viewing area at FLL is open again everybody who sent a complaint letter in to the airport and city administrators needs to send a thank you letter to each one of those people.

Butter the wheels for next time they get a dumb idea in their head, that sort of thing. It also will show that you are not some sort of one time reactionary.

I just emailed to Joe Fernandez and here he sent back to me

Hi Sam

First of all, it was nice having you over here in Miami. We had a good
time! I know it will be nice when you come for Columbus! Sorry as I didn't send an e-mail before. By the way, that was a very nice internet report you did....very good and professional....everyone liked it.

FLL as of now is still closed...I spoke with Walt (like Bruce) and he
will let me know of
any new happenings. I explained to him that our show is this coming week
and that
we are going to have many visitors. I cannot imagine everybody at the
holes at MIA....it will be too crowded!

Well, I will let you know and I hope things go well for them to reopen
FLL for
the enthusiast.

Take care and keep up the good work!

Joe

Have anyone been to FLL take a good look whether is opened or not?

I was in OPF on the 31st. They let me right in, 4 AirTran DC9s are there, some DC-8s, CO DC-10, CO MD-80 and a couple 72s along with some older Convair and DC-3 junk  Smile

The West lot at FLL is still closed!

This is really sad, because we have had some great stuff here. Including DL 777, MD-11, the new DL connection ERJ-145. NW 742, DC-10-40. AC A320 60th. ACES A320. And the Embraer Legacy has been here for a few weeks.

Miami is truly a world class airport and in my opinion a thousand times better than FLL. I usually fly into FLL (cheaper) and head straight to MIA. After all, where will you find IB and AF narrowbodies on this side of the Atlantic? Also, where will you see a 727 that has flown all the way from Bolivia (LAB)? Miami remains, thanks to some photographers recently, a photo friendly airport.

Thanks to everyone who contacted me and convinced me to go! I have booked my ticket...I'm going to try ATA for the first time. I'm flying into FLL around 2pm on Friday and leaving out of MIA on Tuesday around 6:30pm. I don't know where I'm staying yet, but it will be near MIA.

This is my first trip to southern Florida...I'm looking forward to it!

I wish I could head down to MIA with the rest of you. I'll just have to stay stuck in the snow at EWR and JFK instead. :-( Hope you all have a blast down there. Can't wait to see the great pics that come from the weekend!

This'll be my first time to Florida as well - can't wait!! Not sure what day I arrive as of yet, probably Friday around noon at FLL. How does one get from FLL to MIA quickly and vice-versa?

Take care boys, hope to see lots of new faces  Smile

Hi,Rob

Finger crossed that you will have heaps of fun in Miami, the gangs down there have some unbelivable collection (K25 and K64 for you!  Big grin and also they are some unreal meat eaters, not sure this yr Sat Dinner will go Hitching Post again or not, but the meat quality really dropped..anyway have fun! Remember the guys in MIA are not into Airliners.net much, Eddy got rejection before....If you have time, teach Eddy how to set up a little website. He urgently need someone bright and young and patient to teach him!

I am going SEA Feb, may do YVR too! See ya then

Rob,

If you don't plan to rent a car, probably the least expensive and most convenient way to get MIA from FLL is by the "Super Shuttle" transport service. A taxi will cost considerably more.

Sam,

I would have expected you to fly back to Miami two weeks later for the convention, shame on you  Big grin That's ok - you need to stay in OZ and shoot the QF A330 and AirNuigini B763  Smile, but on KR this time ok?  Big grin In any case, I'm always hungry and ready for a feast - bring it on!

Jason,

No hard feelings about the comment I made about YVR in the "IAH Paranoia" thread - if I see you around, I'll definitely go and say "hi".

Graham,

Thanks for the tip - and this shuttle takes about 30 minutes or so to go from one airport to the other?

Cheers,
-Rob

Those of you who haven't already flown into South Florida for the Eddy Gual Slide Orgy, and are planning to rent a car, should use Priceline to get a hotel room damn cheap instead of paying the Comfort Inn $85 a night. Richard Silagi and John Dzurika both got rooms at the LaQuinta on NW 25th Street west of MIA for $28 a night for their stays here. The hotel is only a year or so old and includes a free continental breakfast each morning. It may be a 7 to 10 minute drive from hotel to the slide fest but I'd do that in a heartbeat than pay $57 more a night for a Comfort Inn. Not only that, there's a ton of good restaurants on NW 87th Avenue down the street from the hotel.

I-95 will do the trick, but there's a couple other ways too. Definitely see Uncle Don, Eddy, Joe Fernandez or Kevy Coook about it.... takes about 30-40 minutes to get from MIA-FLL and vice versa if you got a lead foot like me... and a word of advice regarding MIA traffic... stay off the Palmetto Expressway any chance you get!! Always traffic up the waazoo on there... have fun Rob, wish I was coming down this year, but I skipped out this time around. Don't forget a pit stop over by South Beach if you get a chance too... plenty of good spotting there also.  Big grin
Next year MIA again for me... since I have family down there to visit anyways.
