Should I Cancel My Trip To IAH This Month?

Fri Jan 03, 2003 1:52 pm

I have tickets purchased on United to do some photography at IAH January 18-20. I've been hearing about how "the spot" there is closing tomorrow, probably for good.

I've been on the parking deck before, but didn't like it all that much. If the parking deck is as good as it's going to get, then I don't know if I wanna go. Not being familiar with the airport or anyone local there, I don't know if there are any other great "spots".

So all you Houston folks out there...Should I go or change my ticket over to DEN-LAX?

Well bare in mind, IAH has 2 spotting locations. Indeed the spot adjacent 27 is shutting down tomorrow, however the spot near 15-33 L/R is still open and there are no plans (that I know of) as of yet to close it (Check out some of Burce Liebowitz's recent shots from that vantage point as well as Joe Pries's from last July) as well as a few from me

And when the winds are form the north you can get some nice line up shots

As you can see this is a great place to shoot rotation shots. So, I would say that IAH is still open for business. Even if the official vewing area off 27 is shut down, the local authorities seem to care less about parking on the side of Lee Rd. under the approach.

Thomas,

Have you been able to find out the reason for the closing of that one location?

TIA

Sunil,

Sadly, after my 2nd e-mail I have yet to hear from HAS. I will send out a 3rd this afternoon.

Thomas,

You've convinced me I should hang on to these tickets and go. Thanks! I'm coming in Saturday, Jan 18 around 1:30pm and am leaving the following Monday after dark. Will you be around during this time?

While I'm thinking about, how's Houston Hobby?

Hi Mark,

Well, I am glad to see that my photos actually did some good......I was starting to wonder.

Hopefully I will be in town at that time however as my schedule is so erratic, I can not make any firm commitments at this early stage. Contact me (via the e-mail in my profile) perhaps 3-4 days before you arrive.

As for HOU, well to be honest it has been sometime since I was last there (and that visit was to pick up a friend). I have been meaning to make the 40 mile run out to HOU, however the traffic conditions which can be a real pain which is probably the sole reason why I have yet to made a photo expiditon out there. As IAH is some 10 miles from my home, this is my airport of choice for both photography and traveling.

Later,

Mark –

Thomas or I will gladly show you around IAH. At least once a week, I go to watch the afternoon European bound heavies depart. Rankin Road viewing area (15/33 L/R) proviedes a great place to spot the departures.

Hobby is not a top spotter’s destination by virtue of the heavy Southwest traffic. Other commercial traffic is limited and utilizes common types. However, I have seen New Mexico One, Shamus, Silver One, and other WN special schemes there numerous occasions. There is a good amount of GA and corporate traffic there – with BBJs, etc.

See you in Houston!

I must say I'm a bit disappointed at IAH. Of course, the area off Lee Road is closed. That's not too bad because it's a summer only spot. I found an area to shoot 26 arrivals, but the planes are a tad bit too high for my taste. Rankin Road is okay. I got all of the European departures today... CO 777, KLM 744, Air France 777, BA 777, and some other stuff. My lens isn't long enough though for this spot, especially for 15R departures. Anything smaller than a 757 I can't fill the frame with my 300mm lens.

For those interested, I'll be out on the parking deck tomorrow morning. I'm going to try for Terminal A (I'll park in A/B and walk over). After lunch I'll either be at Rankin Rd or that spot over off Lee Rd for runway 26. If you see a red Ford Focus, that'd be me.

Boy, Houston really is the fattest city in the U.S. (Just came from Deerbrook Mall).
