I Need Your Opinions...

Sat Jan 04, 2003 10:31 am

Just ordered this lens... It seems to be the best lens that I can afford but I'd just like to get your views on this.

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM
http://www.canon.co.uk/cgi-bin/parser.pl?page=products&product=445&subprodtype=68

Has anyone used it? How was it? etc. etc. Your input is greatly valued.

Thanks guys.
John.

I've got exactly the same lens. It's good for the price. Reasonably sharp and reasonably well-built. But you can't expect top notch quality though.

I think this lens is used by a number of other photogs here as well.

Been using this lens for a couple of months now. I'm fairly happy with it, since it creates quite good pictures:

However, don't expect perect results under poor weather conditions (i.e. low light): AF tends to get slow and pictures come out quite dark when using ISO100 - 1/500th - f/5.6 at full 300mm. But, using PS or PSP you can still turn those rather dark pics in A.net-worthy pictures (just look at my pics from LHR for instance).

Hope this helps.

Wow, thanks for your input guys, much appreciated! It's looking quite promising but we don't get much good weather here in Ireland unfortunately hehe, but oh well.

Great pictures by the way, Ivan, what kind of camera have you used in combination with the 75-300mm to get those kind of results?

Thanks again guys,
John.

The lens is a very good value SHAMROCK_107. I've been using it for over ten years now and it has never let me down. The ultrasonic motor is fast. The AF sometimes has difficulty in low light but that's a time for manual focusing. If I were you, I would have went for the IS (image stabilizer) version. Gives you a little more room for error when in the 200-300mm range.

Again, thanks for your views guys. That is a very nice collection of shots Dripstick. If only I was able to accomplish these kind of results I would be extremely happy.

I do have another question, however, my camera is a pretty standard Canon EOS3000. I'm not even sure that it's sold anymore hehe. Anyway, I was just wondering should this lens work well with this particular body or could I come accross some problems.

Also, is there any specific film that would yield good results with this body and lens?

Thanks guys!!
John.

SHAMROCK_107: Since your camera body is an EOS-type one, there should be no problem whatsoever using this lens (in theory)...

I use this lens as well, on my D30. i have found that at the max length 300mm it is hard to get a really good action shot - but not impossible. It's a good lens for the money but not as fast as a 2.8 & does not have IS.

The majority of my recent Houston shots were with this lens. The window-view shots from the plane were not (they were 19mm mostly) - but i have gotten some excellent rotations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great shots Bruce... Almost makes me want to go right out and buy a D30. Unfortunately that's not possible until I start actually earning money hehe.

Thanks for you comments.

Thanks Jeroen, and I hope to get to EHAM some day! Big grin

And LGW, thanks for your input. I have always been a fan of your shots and it is great to hear you are using this lens. Lets hope I can get similar results! Smile

Anyway, has anyone got any ideas as to the film that would be recommended?

Thanks again guys!

John, cheers. Before buying my D30, I used a Canon EOS 3000 with the lens same as you will be using I think?

I always found Kodak Supra 100 film was best (for me) used to buy it from www.7dayshop.com

I have this lens. It is sharp but gets softer near 300mm. I bought this lens recently and have shot 5 rolls with it. Most of the shots were 250+mm and I wasn't that happy as far as sharpness is concerned. I am now thinking of selling it and getting a Canon EF 100-300mm f/5.6L fro E-bay. It is supposed to have excellent optics and offers superb sharpness.

Thanks a lot LGW! I'll give that film a spin and see how I like it.

And Lewis, thanks for your comments. The lens you speak of does indead sound excellent but as I said this is the best lens I could get for the kind of money I had. I'm sure the lens you are looking for is considerably dearer?

Anyway, thanks a lot guys!

Ben, just took a look at that site and noticed that there was no Kodak Supra 100. There was however a Kodak Royal 100. Is this the same one or...?

Sorry if it seems like a silly question. *hides* hehe

Cheers,
John.
