Weather = Sh*t, Would You Still Go Spotting.

Wed Jan 15, 2003 7:05 pm

Picture this, you have a chance to go spotting at an airport you don't normally visit and would really like to go. However, weather reports predict heavy winds and tons of rain. There is a big risk that you may not get many good pictures. To make matters worse, this is a fairly rear opportunity for you (going to that particular airport). And to top it off, you don't even have the worlds best access to the airport.

Do you still go...?

Those of you with a sharp mind probably realise that this is the kind of question I'm faced with now. I feel I have nothing to lose, so I may go for it.

Probably I would still go, unless I could use the time in another sensible way.
I would at least try to get some shots for myself...
In fact, I have mostly poor weather shots from Kai Tak, but that's better than having none, and the memories of having been made it well worth.

Hi!

Here in Madrid temperatures have been below 0ºC (32ºF), i plan to go this weekend because it seems it´s going to be cooler.

If you go, try to go with tons of coats, umbrellas, gloves,... seriously, the day you want to go just wake up and see how the day looks like, sometimes (many i would say), weather forecasts are totally wrong!

I know many spotters from Northern Europe and Northern USA still go spotting during extreme conditions, all my respect to you.

Hell yes, crap weather can also provide the opportunity for some of the most artistic photos possible, if you know just when to hit the shutter.

To steal a line from fishermen:
"A bad day of spotting is better than a good day at work"

If you have the chance to go....go....always go, because when you find out you could have seen a plane you have always wanted to see and you missed it you will never forget it.

Go for it! Who knows you may never get back there again and maybe you'll be just lucky enough to catch a real gem. At least the pictures you take will be memories of your visit whether they're good or bad.

I go only when there is something rare, but otherwise I don't enjoy bad weather all that much.

But being cold doesn't mean anything, I was out spotting yesterday and a week ago, temps yesterday were -10 and -20 last week, didn't stop me..... Smile

Here are the results from last week:

At my home airport: Only if something rare is coming in, and if my wife is a bad mood  Big grin

Far-off location: If I am close by, and I am assured of getting a lot of registrations that I don't have, I'll go. But if I have to go a long way, and the weather is really lousy, forget it.

Ok, so most of you guys would go despite bad weather. I was thinking so myself when it suddenly turned out I couldn't go after all. Ironically it wasn't due to the weather, but the fact that I lost my ride to the airport. (Driver wasn't going after all, and poor students like myself can't afford public transport everytime I feel like going spotting.) Oh well there's always a chance in March.  Smile

Thanks for your oppinions everyone.

Dmitry - those are great shots !!

Thomas - In crap weather I would go fishin' - cause fish bite real good when the weather is such. Or I might stay home and play the guitar.

I've never shot much plane pics in bad weather...

Spotting is more interesting in bad weather, photography is easier in good weather.

I'd still go, because most of the time I have no choice and I have such bad luck with this sort of thing that every time I go it rains or it is dark and cloudy or raining..

Fishing isn't really an option for me at the time Terry,  Smile

It's not like I haven't taken pictures in rain before, an earlier spotting trip nearly drowned me. But there is infact one type of weather worse than rain for a spotter...

Well, I f I had travelled that distance, I'd give it a go, just so I could look back at those pics to give me a reminder. However, I'd probably only stay at the airport a short while and then go sightseeing. The chances are I'd forget about any photos going to a.net, but you never know, there could be interesting conditions and it could clear up later in the afternoon.

Remember, there are other things to enjoy other than planes!

Plus you never know and the weather forecaster could be wrong and you could end up having better weather than forecasted.
