How Many Shots Of The Same Plane?

Thu Jan 16, 2003 4:56 am

When you are out photographing planes how many pictures do you snap of it as it comes by. Do you try to get it right the first time or take 5 shots from front to back as it goes by? I guess it varies from plane to plane but what is an average for each? I take from 2-5 shots each time, is this to many or not enough to get the right shot?

Corey,
Good question! For me it is a matter of what plane it is. Here in Denver, we get a non-stop procession of United Airlines stuff. So for them, I may take one or two, or none at all. Quite a few Frontier planes coming by as well, since I like their schemes, and since I don't keep up with what tail is on what plane, I normaly shoot 2 or 3 of them.

I will always shoot the "big guys" 767's and up. When visiting another airport, I try to get as many as I can of what ever.

Always try to get it right the first time!

I usually try to get "one in the can" using the upper third of the focal length of whatever lens I am using at that moment. It usually is a "3/4's" type shot. Then I usually bring the lens down to a focal length that fills the frame, and I blast away. This only applies to interesting subjects. If it is something boring and common I won't snap it, unless something makes the shot unusual (weather, background, etc).

Usually, only 1 or 2 because of the lag whilst the LCD is blank, I can't follow the aircraft or take pictures, so normally one either 3/4 or side on, and then one as the aircraft moves away from me.

Although, when I had an SLR it was more like 6 or 7, 3 or 4 shots of the aircraft in full, then some closeups and then 1 or 2 different angles.

hmm..

I always aim for that perfect shot - full frame with nothing cut off. Worked a few times.

It also depends on whether you're shooting slides or digital....

I always try and compose and wait for the optimum first shot - if possible I'll then take a few follow up shots as insurance. I find that if I start shooting as the aircraft is approaching my ideal position, more often than not I miss that shot. I think it is quite important to try and pre-visualise the shot you really want and concentrate on that rather than use the scatter gun approach and hope for the best - but always be ready for the unexpected!

I also wait until I have the shot composed as I want it and then take the picture. Sometimes I'll leave it at that, and sometimes I'll take a few more frames.

I usually take 2-3 shots of planes on rotations, but that usually on heavies, aircraft like the 737/757 get one, usually.

Usually three to four if it's ordinary. If it’s a special scheme or something rare I’ll just hold the trigger from front ¾ to rear ¾… this usually results in anywhere from 10-15 frames (or more sometimes). Film is cheap vs. loosing a shot because of focus problems, camera shake, glare or other unforeseen problems.

For taxiway, landings or otherwise slow-moving or static shots, 1 frame only.

If the lighting is lousy, I might bracket the shot - 3 frames.

On rotations, I might take 3 or 4 shots, if it's a heavy, otherwise 1 frame only. I might also take several shots if I am trying to get a particular effect, like thrust wakes in front of a background which will make them obvious, or condensation over the wings.

And of course if something really rare comes in, I will take up to a dozen shots for future sales, trades, or simply insurance.

Thanks so much for the replies. I see that I do the same as most everyone. I just wasn't sure if I was crazy for snapping off 5 or 6 when something good comes by, and only 1 or 2 for something more "regular".

I take 2 shots normally. One as it passes and another from behind. (Mostly to get the reg.)

If it's a slow plane I may take 3-4 pics, but like I said normally no more than 2.

Normal traffic - two shots (insurance against a bad reflection) normally 3/4 front and side-on.

Interesting planes - 4 shots. 3/4 front, 3/4 front with a tight composition, side-on and 3/4 rear. If landing, I keep it framed until touchdown and take one more if it is a smoker.

I'll take 4 or 5 shots ... If 1 by chance is out of focus, i always have a back-up ... i check all 4 or 5 and pick the best 2 for upload ...

Well, if it's hot, new and on the ramp, 36-72 frames Big grin

For all my actionshots usually between 2 and 7, depending on the subject.

btw, Dmitry: you should really take more of those rotationshots at ANC than 1 or 2, wouldn't be too hard to sell/trade them.

If the airplane is common like US 757, DL 757, SW New Mexico One or HP Phoenix Suns I'll take 2-3 frames. But if something is interesting I'll take 5-10 shots. I have two winners in this category. 12 frames at once - UPS 767 in Olympic c/s following DL 757 Soaring Spirit 13 frames. Yeap, I had only those two aircrafts landing on one roll  Smile

Hi,

Well, since I have my D60 I try to take as many shots as possible. As simple as that. This doesn't mean that I press the shutter release button and just let it take 8 pictures. No, sometimes I take 3 or 4 when the a/c is coming towards me, and when it's side on I take another 2 or 3, and when the aircraft is about to touch down, maybe another one or two.

When the aircraft is in front of me standing still, I usually try to play with the exposure, to get at least one good result. Bracketing might help.

And, untill a couple of weeks, sometimes I didn't take a shot of an aircraft, e.g. when I've seen it 100 times before. However, now I take at least 1 shot of every aircraft that flies over. You never know if something might happen (let's hope not!). If it does, at least there'll be at least one final picture of the aircraft.

Hope this helps,

Ivan
