Can Too Much Zoom Be A Bad Thing?

Fri Jan 17, 2003 6:06 am

While I love having the advantages of longer range shots with 380mm, I find myself struggling alot not to cut off parts of aircraft, and try to get a clean full frame shot. My hunger to keep the zoom pegged at 380mm got the better of me the other day. I messed up a number of pics that were almost full frame but not quite, because I would wait for the aircraft to hit a nice angle, but couldn't quite follow through while trying to get him in the frame.
This shot here I think would have been great if I hadn't cut of the danged tail!!! Sometimes it leaves me wondering whether or not the 380mm is really a good thing...

It's not the zoom who cuts tails or noses, it's the person behind the camera  Big grin

Don't worry, keep practicing, that's the best advice.

the problem with Big Zoom is things like heat, haze, and other airborne crap can hurt the image quality.

Not to mention wind and cold which lead to the photographer shaking and shivering thus introducing camerashake  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
If you've ever tried using a 100-400 in 50 knot winds you'll know what I'm getting at  Big thumbs up
I wish I were flying

I'm shying away from having to use longer focal lengths.

The reason being, my camera just isn't good enough. I have a chronic lens distortion problem (that isn't my finger Big grin), where the right side is always distorted badly to the point of wrecking the picture, only half of the aircraft ever seems to be in focus (blurry around edges when using olympus B-300+380mm), etc.

All gets annoying, but as soon as I can afford a D30/60/90 + lenses i'm sure things will improve..

It know it can be the photographer, alot of times it is my fault  Laugh out loud
But sometimes the urge to use the zoom to its fullest is messing me up!
Jtwenting summed up another one of my problems :P hehe.

Clovis,
Nope, not showing.

Also, with your camera, it is very difficult to zoom, focus, and shoot rapidly. Trust me, I know. You are then forced to compose the shot in your head before the aircraft gets to your "zone". Practice, practice, practice.
