Advice To Anyone Visiting FLL This Week/ATL Next..

Sat Jan 25, 2003 11:47 pm

week.

Please try to avoid any tourist spots... these areas will be packed. Also, be prepared for long checkin times as well as overbooked flights.

The reason I'm saying this is because the NHL All star game is in FLL and the NBA in ATL.... and anyone visiting HNL, you might want to know that the Pro Bowl is next week, so there will be 80,000 visitors there for that as well.

Wonder about spotting opportunities then? Sports charters? Extra charters to bring fans.... Wow!

Maybe for the pro bowl... the NHL can't and the NBA can't since they don't have 1 team... but there will be increased smaller jet action at the INTL and regional airports I'd imagine.... and maybe a few charters.

I don't think that you will notice any difference in the South Florida area (in terms of extra people) due to the NHL All Star game. I'm sure most of the fans who will be going to the game are locals... I highly doubt you will notice any impact on flights or "tourist spots"... get real.

I don't know... most NHL fans are from the north!
on a side note... if you want to fly down on the 31st and return on the 2nd on Delta, you can get coach going down and first going up for only $454!
Not bad for all star weekend.... However, the flights are REAL full!

Its only costing me $206 including taxes and fees flying NorthWORST economy from Minot, ND (MOT-MSP-MIA-DTW-MSP-MOT). Bahhahahahahahha...

But I had to sacrifice 9,500 miles that I probably wouldn't have used anyway.. Otherwise the fare was $550-600 or something  Wow!

I know for a fact that American Trans Air has some charters running to HNL for the Pro-Bowl. More that likely it will be our 757's

Does anyone have a good online guide or a photo of the spotting location(s) at MIA and/or FLL?

Also, how big are the holes? Enough to pan through?

thanks,
Serge

Serge, at FLL there are two designated spotting areas, one favoring arrivals on 9L and one favoring arrivals on 27R...

For 27R, this viewing area is rather simple to get to, its the roof level of the Hibiscus Garage, once you get into the airport complex just follow signs for parking and then you'll see a sign for the Hibiscus Garage, go in, park and take the elevator to the 7th floor (roof level), and your there...its pretty self-explanatory from there...good all around view but a little bit far...but very windy up there...bring a windbreaker if you use this spot...there are no fences here, so nothing obstructs the view at all

For 9L, the viewing area is tucked into a corner of the airport, its extremely difficult to find (I cant give step by step directions though, its one of those places I get to by visualizing it while enroute, if you want I can try mapquest or something to see if that works) its not walkable from anywhere unless you wanna walk 2-3 miles or so...but you get a commanding view of aircraft swooping over I-95 on finals to 9L and the aircraft touching down, as well as being incredibly close to the action...very close...live ATC is also blared out over speakers...the fence is an issue here, there was photo holes in the fence up until shortly after 9/11, then they were removed and AFAIK never put back...you'll see a large mound nearby that would seem to offer a great view over the fence, however the cops (who patrol the area frequently), arent too keen on people going up there so use caution...

Any other questions dont hesitate to ask...

Have fun!

Reference FLL viewing area on the west side: you need a six foot ladder to shoot over the fence from the crown in the roadway (not next to the fence unless you want to get a visit). The smart guys rent a truck and shoot from the roof or the hard bed liner with or without a ladder for additional height. The view park is on SW 34th Street just east of the Animal shelter on the corner of Perimeter Road and 34th. It's on the south side of the approach end of runway 9-left and you can get there by taking the airport's perimeter road around either the north side or south side of the airport.

FLL's Hibiscus garage is entered from the lower level entrance, first turn on the left side where it says "parking." Miss that turn and you're doomed unless you like to park in short term, pay big bucks, and walk a good distance back to the Hibiscus garage. Take the spiral driveway all the way to the top floor and you can usually park in a space on the north side facing 9L/27R. You need 300mm or more up there. Shooting between Delta's terminal and the new terminal (CO, NW, WN) gives you a straight shot at 27R landings, aircraft taxiing out for takeoff, and 9-left takeoffs (good from anywhere up there).

The spotting holes at MIA are on NW 25th Street where the road bends southeast on the west side of the airport. It's slightly north-northwest of the FAA towers. Park across the street and not in the Customs parking lot. Panning through the holes depends on the diameter of your lens.

Don't the archives on this forum retain information such as the above?

Thanks Greg and Don. I'll be sure to print your posts. It'll be nice to be "home" again next month- haven't been back for a few years and wasn't into AV photography back then.

Don, I searched for a while on the subject and I wasn't able to find anything confirming the holes are still at MIA or if you're able to pan through them. Also, as we are well aware of, information and access changes quite a bit- can't really depend on much old information in this day and age. I always use the search function before posting.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

thanks!
