IAH Needs Your Help!

Wed Jan 29, 2003 11:24 am

OK guys, we have finally put up a petition @ Petition Online in order to help save IAH's 2 observation areas. As many of you are probably already aware, we lost our Lee Rd area earlier this month and the Rankin Rd spot is slated for clousre as well (pending a city council vote). So, on the heels of Don Boyd's very sucessful petition that resulted in the re-opening of the FLL park we in Houston are attempting this as well.

So, if you all would be so kind as to sign this petition so we may be able to save the wonderful pastime of 'spotting' from becoming an outlawed activity at one more US airport.

So once again you help is needed We can save these areas if we really want it bad enough!

Thanks guys for the positive feedback that we are currently receiving from you all.

I want to personally acknowledge 3 individuals in particular for this petition. First, Kevin McQuarrie who is a Houstonian currently residing in the UK, it was he who penned this petition so beautifully. Secondly, Nathan Thompson who took the time to post this up on Petition Online and finally Don Boyd who inspired us to fight for our passion of spotting as well as allowing to use some excerpts from his original FLL petition

Don't let the sun set on IAH's spotting areas.

124 signatures........WOW!!

Guys, we here in Houston can't thank you all enough for your kind support. Frankly I did not expect this to take off as quickly as it did...... talk about momemtum, let's keep it up! What do you say that we shoot for 300 before midnight local CST (0600 Zulu).

BTW, does anyone recall what Don's totals were on his petition? For some reason I am thinking somewhere in the 600 neighborhood. I would like to try to match it if at all possible.

Again we here send our most sincere thanks for all of your efforts.

I signed it too. I think Don got about 300 signatures for his. This is a start to a lot. The more people who sign, the more they will know how our hobby means so much to us. They used to be spotter friendly, now they stabbed us in the back and turned us away.

Correction on the FLL view park petition. When the total hit 600 (not 300) I printed out the petition and mailed hard copies (27 pages of small font with remarks column widened to reduce the white space) to all the county commissioners and the mayor. The petition has only gained 30 signatures since the first of the month (630 total now). I wanted to get the petition into the hands of the powers to be right after the holidays and before a ton of spotters and photographers arrived in this area during the prime month of January.

I've sent the IAH petition to all my friends hoping they will sign on. It's been posted on the Skyone Yahoo group by someone else and someone should post it a few times (every other day or so because stuff gets flushed fast due to the number of daily postings) on the newsgroup alt.binaries.pictures.aviation because a lot of folks post and look at that newsgroup.

Just curious, did anyone get a photo of Air Force One when he was at Houston for the Columbia Memorial?
