D100 At Last!

Fri Jan 31, 2003 8:11 pm

My D100 was delivered yesterday! Yup that's right, 16 years old and just bought my own DSLR. The camera is incredible.

For you D100 users... When you're out spotting, what quality setting do you user with the camera? Fine, Large... or do you shoot with RAW? Also, should I turn on the sharpening or noise reduction features?

Any other useful hints/tips would be greatly appreciated!

I shoot with JPEG/FINE at Large mode.

RAW simply takes too LONG to save and time isnt really always in abundance when you're photographing great stuff Big grin

I use Auto for Sharpening and Tone Composition.

Love the cam Big grin

Also, as a side note... just in case any of you are interested.

I'm upgrading from a N80. I have a 19-35mm, 28-80mm, and 70-300mm lenses and then a 2x magnifier. I bought a 1GB memory card and an extra battery for the D100. I've never uploaded any of my photos because I didn't want to invest any money in a film scanner, but I have managed to get some pretty good prints. Keep an eye out for a new ATL photographer on airliners.net.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Congrats man,

I just also bought me a Nikon D100 last week and hopefully it would come into the camera store today, if not definatly tomorrow. How much did you pay for the 1GB microdrive? I may get an additional memory card, if so, a 1GB.

Good luck on your new camera.

Kevin <--will not be eating for 2 weeks becuase I am now broke.

Good to hear Hank!

I really prefer NEF over jpeg, and if you use NEF, none of the in camera tweaks have any effect on the resulting image. I am not sure why Tsentsan mentioned it takes too long? Maybe in converting from NEF to Tiff to Jpeg.

I use jpeg in the large/fine setting often too, and have seen excellent results. I am not sure what you refer to as "noise reduction" features. Your best bet on settings is to just head out and shoot some pictures in all the different modes and settings so you can see the effects.

I can't wait to see some shots from Oceana!

Jeff -

Its like it takes a long time for the buffer to clear and write its contents to the Flash card, maybe cos my Flash card was slow... but my friend who works in Nikon demonstrated to me using this new super fast Lexar card, and it was able to maintain 1 FPS even when the buffer was maxed out, awesome! Big grin

Yo Hank - you are a lucky boy!!

When I was 16 - that was way back in 1977 - well anyway, way back in 1977 I got something far greater than a digital camera... She was twice my age - and she...

Damn, in retrospect, I wish my family woulda had money...

My family didn't pay for it... I work and pay for it all myself.

I uploaded everything here: http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/wcjetguy/lst?&.dir=/Great+Shots&.src=ph&.view=t Click on "show all" and all the pictures taken with the D100 are marked. Keep in mind that all these were taken in the first 24 hours that I had the camera.

Please let me know what you think!

Thanks,

Another one with a DSLR!!!!! Big grin
I know how it feels especially because you earned that money and spent them on something you really wanted. I had been saving for a month and the only thing I could afford was a used, manual Medium Format camera for my non-aviation photos. Can't wait to see photos from ATL!

BTW photos D100_1, 5, 6 and 9 are very artistic. Maybe you should post them in a photo critique website. You will receive useful feedback.

Hank:

I shot RAW most of the times, quality and ability of post processing are worth the file size. JPEG fine only when I want a loooooong sequence.

Enjoy your camera!

I forgot:

Sharpening 0 or Auto.

NO! don't leave noise reduction ON, unless you shot to static subjects at night! you'd get a long shutter lag.

anyone who says shooting in NEF mode is slow has their camera set to compressed NEF.

anyone who is shooting compressed NEF needs to go buy more memory.

If you bought a DSLR and are skimping on the memory you need to check yourself.

Thanks for the compliments!

I have a Sigma 28-80mm, Quantarry 70-300mm, and now a Tamron 19-35mm.

I don't remember the settings for those pictures, but a lot of that was with the help of PS7.
