I Nominate This For Editor's Choice...

Mon Feb 03, 2003 12:26 pm

I came across this great pic by Tom Turner out at LGA. It is one of the best NYC pics out there, and should definately, IMHO, be considered for editor's choice. It's a AA 757 landing on RWY22 at LGA, but the NYC skyline is the best part...

I have always been a fan of Tom's work - he knows exactly what he is doing and when to release the shutter.

Keep shooting Tom, also like you GA action photos - get some more of those!

Thanks jcxp15, Dmitry. I thought people might enjoy it.

As it was rejected the first time for "bad distance" I doubt it will find its way into the cool shots category. Oh well.

Dmitry I would love to shoot some more general aviation..but that might endanger my status as one of the top 250 photographers in the views-per-photo sweepstakes.. haha.. just kiddiing.. seriously, I would love to, but it is not always convenient to get to the nearest or friendliest GA airports from NYC. But, one way or another, have to get some in this summer.. Keep the good stuff coming from Alaska.

btw, it was probably colder the day I shot this than it was in Alaska. And a few hours after this was taken I was at JFK with Big Phil and we got surrounded by 6 cop cars...the usual.

Once we explained who we were and gave them our names.. Peter Unmuth and Andy Martin; and we worked for A.net and showed them our A.net gear everything got cleared up and they gave us a tour of the ramp.

So yeah, I'm glad if anyone likes the fruits of this labor...no matter the #s.

haha.. good one Peter. I'm sure there might be something left over from the '70s.  Wink/being sarcastic and, of course you've seen Big Phil's "airport overview" upload..
Now, there was a "great shot"...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy  Innocent

The part I left out was when I told them I had 800 pix on A.net. They said "well, if thats the case..you can prove it then". "you guys should be able to walk on water.. you have our permission to shoot from the middle of Jamaica Bay.. without a boat".  Sad

Turner, that was hysterical. LOL

Yes, that day was very cold. I was taking video while Tom took stills. It's a great feeling looking at pictures of Tom's like that and knowing that I was standing right next to him when it was taken.

The 6 cop car thing was funny. Tom and I were in a parking lot watching planes that were landing on 31R, and since it was so cold, we would get out when a plane was coming, and got back in and sat (eating sandwiches I had brought) between aircraft.

At one point, we saw a cop car enter th parking lot and look at us, we weren't sure if he was there for us or not, and I put my head down, finished chewing and wrapped up the remainder of my sandwich in case he came at us. It seemed like by the time I looked up, we were surrounded on all sides by Nassau County Police cars, and they were already approaching the vehicles, to both sides of us.

We explained who we were and what we were doing and they let us go after a short while. No sodomy or cavity searches necessary. Big grin

It was a great day, regardless of how cold it was. I was surprised at some of the newer views that I had never seen before. Opened up a whole new world of JFK spotting for me.

By the way, I think those skyline shots that Tom took are certainly worth Editor's Choice. Why don't you compare it to "older" work?

Yeah Its a sweet shot,

I really like it, although I do believe (and I hope Tom agree's with me here lol) that it is not quite 'out there' or 'spectacular' to warrant being in the Editor's choice selection as it is just the skyline of manhattan.

Jcxp15 - I'm sure you would be sick of seeing it by now???  Laugh out loud

Hello Tom!

I have never been bothered by a cop in a year of my shooting at ANC. In the beginning of Jan. I pulled up to the RWY 32 spot to shoot takeoff's and pulled off the road into the deep snow (was in a Chevy Suburban so 4x4 was there), a cop drives by and sees me warming up in the Sub, he stops to see if I am stuck and can't get out - well I told him thanks for being kind and checking, but I am fine.

I am sure we could use some of those type of cops down in the lwr 48, at least it seems that way sometimes.....all he said was, have fun and see you later.

Thats suited me!

No offense taken Dan.
(but no, we don't get tired of looking at the skyline...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

It's a one-trick shot as so many of them are.
(I even get bored looking at some of the St. Maarten pix these days -and others.. unless someone figures out something new with them.)

If I want to look at Great Shots, I usually just do a search on Glenn Alderton or Mark Garfinkel; I tend to see the editor's selection anyway, or they wind up getting posted on here.

Alot of the older stuff in Editor's Choice would never go in there today obviously, and some might not get into the database at all... (as nice as those shots are...); Its tough just trying to keep up with the general acceptance curve.

As Big Phil indicated, this was just a straight copy from Chris Sheldon... of whom we're fans.

Dmitry... most of our cops are good guys..or at least ok. (except one I can remember who was barely in the homo sapien category ...)... they'll just check you out at a distance...but once a "concerned citizen" has reached for their cell phone... they're tasked...and you're going to be put through the nonsense.

If you don't have a press pass, law enforcement ID, or airline credentials...the best thing to do is throw a matchbox or Hotwheels aircraft model in the trunk of the car...(Phil even had a copy of Airways magazine on him) that and an expensive camera do the trick...as soon as they do their search they get back in their cars and call to base: " false alarm - these guys are geeks "

Seriously, you do want them to remember you... for the next time, if you were in a place you had every right to be.

Well Said Tom!

But, when I was down in NYC in Nov........I was departing out of EWR on AS to SEA - now those cops aren't there "to serve us"!
They threatened to arrest me if I didn't shut up........wish I had time to tell that guy to elevate and make sure he knows he's just a cop.

Bute otherwise, I have had no problems! The cops in SEA are wonderful and just as the recording over the terminals says "We are here to serve you" - thats it, and nothing else. That was my experience.

Ah, and I thought all my "fans" had forgotten me. (I suppose I should post some new stuff - haven't done anything new and spectacular in a while).

That NY skyline view is a bit of a pain - it looks absolutely perfect, the aircraft taking off or landing in front of the Empire State... until you put your camera to your eye and realise how small the aircraft is in the viewfinder...

Anyhow, there's just an outside chance I might be back in NYC in April, and if I am, I have a few new ideas for LGA... as long as I can keep from being arrested, that is!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Mr. SHeldon,

I hope you let me know this time if you're coming to LGA. I'd love to introduce you to my dock. :p

Tom,

Nice picture. On the subject of JFK, its good to hear that they still know me, and that they'll still give me ramp tours Big grin Might just pop over to JFK from the UK again sometime soon!!!

I have footage of the plane coming in, and was rolling while Tom grabbed the shot.

Am I the first person to have footage of an anet picture? Even if not, I think that's cool. lol

Video is fun.

I take digital video, and just throw all my uneditted raw digi film onto VHS. Not the greatest quality with it being uneditted and on VHS, but it's fairly entertaining nonetheless. My clips on the computer are a lot better in quality and cuts.

Once I get the technological capabilities, I will make my own aviation DVDs.

Anyone interested?  Big grin
