ATL Security Is Really Bad!

Tue Feb 04, 2003 10:01 am

I was at Hartsfield spotting from the parking deck on Saturday.

Sometimes the parking lot security guy stops me and talks to me for a sec and then goes on his way. Well, this guy told me that I had to stop taking pictures. I told him that I wasn't going to because I was on public property. He asked me for my ID, looked at it, and told me again that I had to leave. I told him that I had been going there for 2 years taking pictures and that I wasn't leaving. He was persistent and told me again that I had to leave. I was sooo mad!

I told him that I wanted his first and last name and then I wanted his managers name... and telephone number. He wouldn't give it to me. I told him that unless he got the police or his manager up there, I wasn't going to leave. So he starts talking to people on his radio giving them the information on my ID. HAHA! Then he tells me that it's okay that we're taking pictures. Okay great, we were done.

So 30 mins later, I'm still taking pictures. This Jeep stops beside me and a guy gets out and walks up to me with a badge. He said he was a sky marshal and wanted to know what I was doing out there. He questioned me for about 10 mins. I finally got a little rude and said, "look, this is public property. I'm a 16 year old kid from north GA and I have every right to be taking pictures here." So then he tells me that he can make me leave if he wants, because it's a matter of national security, but that he doesn't feel I'm a threat so he's gonna let me stay.

About this time the Lufthansa A340 took off and I, of course, missed shooting it. I was sooo mad! I told the guy that he made me miss the one plane that I came out to get, and he started laughing at me!

Just be persistent guys....

Out of curiosity did you get a good look at the "badge" of the guy who told you he was a "sky marshal?"

Admittingly I know very little about the current 'ins and outs' of TSA regulations however, I seriously doubt that this was a Sky Marshal, as I believe that their jurisdiction is the aircraft only.

To follow up on Tony's question, were there any markings on the Jeep?

I suspect that this was nothing more than some underpaid 'rent-a-cop' trying to compensate for something.  Wink/being sarcastic

God, same airport that let me through security without a ticket, and an itinerary that had the wrong date. No joke. Glad they are more worried about 16 year old white kids taking pics of planes  Big grin

What I was getting at, and Thomas followed up with, is that the Dept of Justice would probably be a little irritated if some security guard was identifying himself as a "Sky Marshal"...So if this were to happen again and the guy flashes a badge you can point out that it is a violation of Federal Law to impersonate a federal officer.  Smile

The same thing happened to me except I was reffered to the police, and had to talk to the chief of the airport precinct. He told me that it was against TSA regs to take pics of a/c. I just gave up...oh well, moved to DFW about 2 weeks later.

A "Sky Marshall" would not be on the parking deck.

If I had been up there and he said that I'd ask for the ID...I got yer GSC right here.

Next time tell him that you have freedom of speach as well and that you think he is the biggest idiot you have ever seen in your life.

Write down his name from his badge too and tell him you will speak to his boss about it.

People like these really piss me off actually.

Here are ALL of the Transportation Security Administration regulations. So for those who insist upon quoting regulations to people, at least you have the tools at your disposal.

TSA is NOT good, it's a "cosmetic" change. Private to Federal!! HAHAHA,, ohh, the federal guys, ohh! GEt a load of the people who think TSA is the greatest thing ever. http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/995296/6/ I thought that TSA was suppossed to be perfect, instead they're sleepin', lettin' people through ( I got through security without a ticket twice), and just being lazy!

Hank,

I think you handled the situation badly and, in doing so, you risk the chance of making a bad situation worse. I was at ATL in Sept. and was aware of problems that were reported there with security and shooting from the parking deck. What I did was go and talk to the airport police, they have an office by the Marta, and inquired about taking pictures. I was told that it was OK, but if requested should be prepared to show my id. I spent several afternoons on the parking deck and was visited a few times by the security guards. I had no problems.

You're right that it's public property and you feel you have every right to be there, but they, I'm sure, have the right to oust you from the property if you have no legitimate reason for being there. By being argumentative you risk the chance that they'll go back and come up with some stupid rule that photographs aren't allowed on the property. I'm not telling you to be a whimp and not stand up for what you believe are your rights, just use a little more common sense and try not to make the situation worse. You won this time, but will you next time.
