Olympus B-300 Vs. Sony VCL-HGD1758

Mon Feb 17, 2003 5:59 am

Ok, so I have the B-300 Teleconverter for my F-707 and It is wonderful. Now, for the new Sony 1.7X converter that came out, which is better?

So lets hear it from some of the guys that have owned the B-300, and the Sony lens as well. Which lens is overall better? Which lens give you better shots? Just explain the converter the best you can.

Thanks

I have the Sony lens for my F707 and I am quite pleased with the results, I've never used the B300 so I can't really compare it, but the Sony lens is quite nice, about $250 or so. This is the only photo I have in the database where I used the teleconverter. So here's an example...

This was taken at full digital zoom and the teleconverter lens. Hope this helps you some.

Well sadly the B-300 is out of production so I won't be able to grab one of those should I want to...  Sad

Currently there is an example of new B-300 selling on ebay at $245.

VCL-HGD1758 is available much cheaper since it is still in production.

Plain simple: I had the B300, sold it and use the Sony lens now.

Quality: nothing beats the B300
BUT: you have more zoom range on the Sony lens, and the Sony comes very, very close to the B300.

Some B300 examples (let the plugs come over you Smile/happy/getting dizzy):

Thanks guys for all the input. I am making a decision to either keep my B-300 and buy the Sony lens as well, or just have 1. I could make a few good dollars off of the B-300 at Ebay. hmmmmm

Hi Gerardo!
you have more zoom range on the Sony lens

Both are X 1.7...

What do you mean by 'zoom range' ?

Gerry,

With the B300 you cant zoom out completely due to the step-down ring

Thanks Wietse.

So there's less vignetting with the Sony lens when pulling back from full zoom?
Pretty marginal I would have thought

BTW, the Sony version on sale in UK is very expensive when ordered from Sony outlets.
B-300's are far cheaper, even after paying customs on receipt.

Nice trio Colin.

You've reminded me that that polarizer also drops light by two stops, similar to an ND filter.
Has any '707 users tried night time shots of aircraft landing/taking off?
I've been trying, but with variable results...
Those extra two stops might come in handy.

...and the wide angle? I don't get close enough to use one.

Also, interesting to see Brian has used full digital zoom.
I occasionally use part of the digital zoom without any noticeable deterioration to the picture. Once manipulated and resized to 1024px, it's fine.
It can take you way beyond the 323mm equivalent.
