Two American Airlines Rejections-Advice Please

Wed Feb 19, 2003 3:47 am

These were both kicked back for badsoft.....

I don't hve any disagreements about the rejection reasons, but I need some advice here. I'm using PS7 to process my D30 images and seem to have a problem with AA pictures, they are either what I consider to be potential 'badjagged' rejections so I don't upload them, or I upload them and get badsoft. I don't think there is an issue with the raw images but I'm sensing that I need some PS7 advice.

As a comparison here are to pictures under similar conditions which were accepted.

I don't recall my USM settings but I use the sharpen tool to touch up the nose gear/nose/cockpit area and titles if necessary. Is there a way applying USM to selected parts of the image without having to resort to the sharpen tool?

I'm afraid I only have a couple of months PS7 experience behind me so I'm still learning how to use it properly.

they are looking a tad soft. Kick up the USM a bit, 500, .2, 0 and hit it a couple of times. Also, maybe play with the levels a smidge.

to sharpen a small area in PS, use the selection tool to select the area you're interested in and the apply the filter. The USM will only be applied to the selected area.

BTW: The two shots in question don;t look that soft. A bit of radius 0.3, threshold 1 should do it.

OK..i'm just a begginer at this so I can't really help here. But IMHO those are some fantastic shots.Especially the first one.Really nice lighting and color. If that was my shot I would print it out and have it up on the wall for sure. But thats just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the advice so far, my settings on USM are radius 0.5 threshold 5 with a USM level of 200 to start with.

Try setting threshold to 0 - a setting of 5 means fine detail won't get sharpened - with a D30 you don't need to worry about empahsising grain!

The sharpening tool should be avoided - it uses a very basic sharpening algorithm. As Jason suggests, you are much better of using the mask tool to select a specific area for sharpening. To avoid any unnatural edges, feather the mask by a few pixels, then apply USM sharpening.

Cheers,

I agree with Colin about setting the threshold to Zero. Another very useful method is to select "Fade" from the dropdown menu and you can further decrease the level of sharpening just applied.

I'm (also) New with PS7..

I had this photo http://airliners.net/procphotos/rejphoto.main?filename=DSCN0338.JPG (the info on the picture page is not the info for my image).
rejected for "baddark" after it was in the "High Quality" que for about a week.
do you think there is any way to improve it with photoshop?

I would appreciate any feedback...

thanks.. danny.
cockpit? it's that little room in the front of the plane where the pilots seat.. but that's not important now
