Investing In A Digital-Want To Pay US$1300-$1500

Sat Mar 01, 2003 4:59 am

http://neoseeker.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=631180/ut=424b1386633bd66a

I am a Minolta fan, and I have been considering this as my next camera. I have a Minolta 700si now. I have 3 lenses.

WILL I BE ABLE TO USE THOSE LENSES ON THIS CAMERA? I am not familiar with the compatability from normal SLR Cams to digital.

Is this a good camera for aviation shots? It seems as if the battery life issue may be the downfall, so I will definitely have to buy an AC Adapter.

Any opinions?

How about a Fuji S-1 off of e-bay for starters, those are going for between $850.00 and $1600 and one dealers has a kit .

The other choice might be the S-602 or the Nikon Coolpix 5700.

Best Wishes

Looks good Chad, but I suggest going to www.dpreview.com and browsing all available selections for that price range. Also, remember to include all the accessories. Case/Storage/Lenses(if SLR)/etc...

NO you cannot use any lenses with this camera. This is not a SLR. It is an SLR "type" camera, but not a genuine one. There are but a few Digital SLR cameras. (the ones you can put normal lenses on)

- Canon D60, 10D, D30, D2000, 1D, 1Ds
- Nikon D1, D1X, D1H, D100
- Sigma SD9
- Fuji S1, S2
- Pentax *ist D
- Kodak DCS14n, DCS760, DCS720X

Thats about it, If there are missing, please fill me in!

The 10D at $1495 US is a real bargain - it makes all the pseudo-DSLRs (I think they're also called ZLRs) like the Minolta 7Hi, Nikon Coolpix 5700 etc very poor value.

The image quality on a real DSLR as compared to a ZLR will be much much better.

Thanks guys, anymore opinions? I would like to hear them. Also, could you post photos you have shot with a digital camera and label what camera it was taken with? Thanks!

I use Sony DSC-F717. Get a teleconverter for that too.

Good day, I'm using a Coolpix 5700 myself and I'm NOT satisfied, I get a 90 percent rate of unsharp and blurred photos. Not because I can't handle this camera or not that I use a wrong setting. In cases which come out to be difficult the 5700 doesn't go well with them.  Sad

For $1500, there is currently nothing better than the new Canon 10D. The only downside is that you'd have to invest in some lenses if you don't have any already.

You might want to pay close attention to Nikon over the next few weeks as well - I wonder how will they respond to the 10D?

If I didn't bought my Nikon D100, I would've gone for the Canon D10 becuase of the price. But I have never used a canon and have no lenses for it. I think $1500 for a D10 is a bargain and im sure its better then the D30 and the D60. That camera is gonna be a sell out.

Maiznblu, maybe you should talk to your "local" PHs in San Diego, I think they use digital SLRs. Least they do here.

Kevin, I have a PH buddy whos TAD to my workcenter. Hes been helping me out a lot. Im going to show him the D10. The cameras they use on board ship are the Nikon models that run close to $9000.00 a pop. A little out of my league.  Big grin

Thanks guys, after all this extra pay I get on my next "ADVENTURE", will help me get the cash.  Big thumbs up

Chad...SInce you are going out on a short cruise you may want to look at picking up something on a port call....Might be some deals out in Singapore or ???

My advice would be to go with the D10 and slowly build up a collection of Canon lenses. There are lots of good lenses available on the used market as well..

Maiznblu, I've showed my D100 around my command and they commented on it like "you got the same ones as the PHs do on ships" but mine is not nearly worth $9,000. But I got to check out the camera when the Vice Admiral gave us his lecture. Anyway, have fun on your adventure. I can't wait for my first cruise. After that, I'll have enough money for a Nikkor 80-400mm VR.

short cruise

Short? I heard our "Cruise" doesnt start till June. You figure it out. LOL! Ughhh!  Big grin

Anyhow, If we go anywhere like that, it would probably be to early for me to have enough money to get one there. By the time I get back, the D10 might be a few hundred less?

GoCaps...

Retail Price: $6310.00

You know the military isn't frugal. That price is cheaper than they pay.
