3D Generated Images Of A340-500/600 - Comments Pls

Sat Mar 01, 2003 6:43 am

Could you be fooled ?

http://www.3d-aviation.com/wallpaper.html

As probably all of you are very experienced in looking at airplane images I'm asking you to comment my 3D computer generated images of Airbus 340-500 and -600. I have tried to make them look as realistic as possible but I'm sure you'll find something that could be improved. Click on the above link and take a look. Different resolutions available. I appreciate your comments.

Technical notes: The images are made using 3d studio max. The aircraft is a 3d model that I have drawn manually. That takes quite a long time and it is a real challenge to get it look right. All the textures on the aircraft are also made manually. But - when you have a finished model you can turn it and view from any angle and make as many shots as you like. There is of course some work in getting the composition with the background right.

Best regards,
Ole

Very cool....and nice detail.

Wow, those are just amazing! Could you post a screenshot of what this program looks like, and a wireframe of the model? It would be really interesting to see that!

Thanks, great work!

Scary really - how long before we won't be able to distinguish a computer generated image from a photograph?

Excellent pictures Ole!

Like mentioned, the engines can be a bit smaller.

FAKE! Oops... Innocent

Those are quite the impressive images, I must say! If you didn't mention it, I would have just dismissed them as air-to-air. But the engines kinda give it away :0) On first glance though, I would have surely thought they were real!

My friend works with 3D Studio Max and now you've given him something to aim for :0)

(BTW, I *was* kidding with the FAKE part...well...you get the idea)

Nice modeling works of Airbus familiy on 3DSMAX. A pleasure to meet someone in the same line of work. Love the Emirates livery you did. Great work!!!

Thanks for your comments so far. Regarding the engine size - just to make sure - you are comparing them to the 340-500/600 ? - like on the images below:

Well I asked the same question yesterday on another topic and nobody replied
Thanx!!

So I figured out that myself, here's is how to do it:

I personally was referring to more of the (HOT STEEL!) blue exhaust cone thingies (pardon the technical terminology) on the engines. Or, most likely, it's my "misperception" now that I look at Jens Flunkert's photo. They seem a *tad* big. Mind you, this is pulling fine details--the images are still absolutely amazing! Bravo! (Are you doing this for Flight Simulator or something?)

Excellent!! These are really good.

2 things though,

As mentioned before, I too noticed that the engines themselves do look a tad big, they are too wide and chunky in diameter. It is noticable.

Also, if you have photoshop, I suggest you sharpen these photos a bit using USM. If you don't, I should be able to sharpen them up for you and then send them back, should anyway...

Cheers

ok just to show you what a bit of sharpening could do:

here is the original (1024x768 to save space on my webspace Big grin):

http://www.3d-aviation.com/wallpaper/EK1_1024x768.jpg

and here is the modified picture (230% USM), Thailand">USM radius 0 i think, something like that..):

http://www.eggd.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/eka345.jpg

I can also mess around with the contrast and color ballance to get it looking a bit better too (at the moment, it is a bit 'flat', needs more contrast..).

Cheers

Dan

Thanks for the comments Dan - I clearly see the difference. I think that the post production of the image is a very tough part - because I have an image that is not real and I have to make it look real - and what is that.....actually. I have also posted some of these images in 3D computer graphics forums and some people there says they need to be blurred a little bit and needs more noise ???

Dan - if you have the time - and a fast connection there is an original rendering of the EK image at the address below. Its a TGA file (3mb) and you can select the aircraft only by "Load selection" and select alpha channel. Then you can give different post production to the aircraft and the background if needed. It could be interesting to see how you think the optimum image should look. Others are of course welcome with their version as well.

Ahhh... thank you! I've been dying to say something about the size of the engines and didn't dare for fear of coming across as a complete Tw@! Big grin

Apart from that Ole, they are truly excellent images and you are to be commended on the quality of the work! If only I could produce photos like that let alone 3D solid models!

Cheers!

Hi again,

Ole, I was looking at the screenshot you posted, particularly the nose wireframe. Some of the edges at the front of the nose look like they spilt off into more edges, I was wondering how you do that (what function to use)?

Thanks again!

Oh yeah, for some reason with the TGA image, when I open it in PS7, I can only see the aircraft. What do I do to get the environment?

I guess I have to resize those engines then.......

Dan - no problem - take your time.

Shawn - regarding the nose section wireframe. It is two meshes that are attached and as they didn't have the same number of vertices I used the Weld/Target function to close the mesh in Edit mesh/vertex mode.

I don't have PSP7 myself but only PSP5 and PhotoShop and I know that PSP5 cannot handle Alpha channels. The image is 32bit and the aircrat is contained in the alpha channel. But when I open the image in PSP5 I get the whole image but without the possibility to select the aircraft only.

BTW - any comments on the A330-300 ?

Best regards,
Ole

Shawn - Sorry, I didn't read your post careful enough. You said Photoshop 7. In that app. you sure should be able to see the whole image. Try and check "Channels" on the right panel.

The engines look a wee bit too big, especially so in the Star Alliance/Air Canada image.

Ole:

I did look through all your posted images and I do agree with many other visitor that your A340-500/600 engine is wee bit too big. Looks like a GE90 or Trent800 from a B777 mounted on an Airbus A340. Otherwise great modeling. Nice mesh work also.

I have the file Dan. If you still want it, email me at shawnb777@adelphia.net and I'll send it. Let me know if you can open it and see both channels in PS7, maybe I'm having a senior moment...
