Spotting @ DFW

Sat Mar 08, 2003 1:14 pm

I'll be visiting Dallas on the 19, 20, 21 of March. I was wondering If anybody had a map showing where valid spotting/photography areas are located. I did a search, and it was suggested that the poster contact a seasoned DFW spotter (his name escapes me), so I did but have received no response.

Also, will anybody be there on any of those days?

Try founder's plaza. It's on the southeast side of the field.
Last year 1,944 New Yorkers saw something and said something.

Founder's Plaza isn't the greatest spot to photograph planes at DFW.
The best spots in the afternoon are by the LH Cargo Building and also the American Eagle Hangar.

The police have been very nice lately and we've not been hassled.

I agree with Jay. Founders is an ok morning spot but the cargo and American Eagle hanger areas are better (afternoon). You will need a step ladder or a rental car to stand on if you want to shoot over the fence.

Where is that LH Cargo building? Is the UPS terminal near the end of that street? Please be more specific about the American Eagle hangar location also. Ditto on the Founders Plaza - bad spot, especially with wind from the north. At least we can spot over the bridge traffic from 17L with a south breeze....

Do you need a car for those locations?

Thanks Jay for the info.... found both spots this afternoon. Had to stand on top of the Ford Explorer though. Not hassled at all. In fact, I was alone for hours...

Hey Riley,

Sorry I didn't make it out there today. You should contact me the next time you go out there. I'll be in PNS next weekend, but also try and get a hold of Josh Rawlins and Brian Peters. They are usually out there all the time.

Go to Home Depot and get you a small step-ladder. That is the best
solution!

Jay, Thanks for the invite. I am not new to spotting but only recently dug out the old Canon T90 and goodies. Need to get new faster lenses and film scanner though. Caught a Trip 7 making way to the terminal from the AA hangar. Got some decent shots. Will purchase Minolta scanner soon and try my hand at uploading to get some expert feedback. Give me a heads up next time you go out....

Sounds good, I'll look around for those spots then. Is the Eagle hangar anywhere near the main AA hangars? (NW area, correct?)

The fence may pose a problem, though. I have a 300lb powerchair strapped to my behind  Big grin Climbing ladders are part of my "Ain't happenin'" book.  Big grin

Hey Riley,

If you are interested, I've got two EOS 630's for sale......just an FYI.
I'll be sure to give you a shout next time I go out to DFW. The weather sure wasn't as great as it was "advertised" by the weather-guessers on Friday that is for certain. Darn ! Friday was such a nice day at DFW!

Jay, Thanks for the offer but I'm saving for a fast Canon zoom. These old lenses won't cut the mustard....

Yes, those media weather guys are hilarious! You would think computer modeling would be more accurate. I like the old fashioned guys myself.

Hey Riley

I would suggest you go to Competitive Camera to buy your fast Canon zoom. Ramsey is a great guy.

Sorry I didn't make it to the DFW spotters meeting today.
I've been out of town and didn't know about it.

Was exploring DFW this morning for new spots, maybe some nook or cranny I had overlooked. I'd been at the South end of 17L taking close-up taxi shots with the bright morning sun behind me and there was just no inbound traffic at all. I pulled into the North construction entrance and proceeded up close to the fence when I was swiftly approached by a young officerette. Let me tell you she really blasted me for being there. Said they had much theft from that area and it was private property for construction employees only and that I should never, ever be in a marked construction area near the runway. I guess maybe she was right, who's to say anyway... I thought as long as I was outside the boundary fence, it was public property. Guess it's different for construction areas. Anyone had similar experiences at major US airports?

Your braver than me going into those marked construction areas. I have only been hassled by an American Eagle employee, he actually asked me if I worked for AMR and then proceeded to make the point that it was illegal to be their or at least try. I guess he hasn't seen my American Eagle pic with all those hits.

Sorry to miss the meeting on Saturday when is the next one?. Leaving for SXM Monday see yah!!!!!!!!!

Jayson, this was not my day at DFW. Was asked to LEAVE by a ramp patrol truck driver at the South end of 17L, in the cul-de-sac. I was tempted to verbalize with the guy, but I'd had enough for one day...
