How To Fix This Soft Photo?

Mon Mar 17, 2003 10:40 pm

Hello guys,
I need some help with this one- it got rejected for bad soft. I tried doing harder unsharp mask but then i get jaggies, so i settled on the way you see it here which I figured is ok but apparently its real soft since it was bounced. What can I do to improve this? are there any other PS 6.1 actions that can help that do know know of?

Most of the custom actions you can get are designed for full size prints and don't scale well to size images.

But I think a 2 pass technique might work well.

1 - use USM to sharpen with settings of 200-300, 0.3, 0

2 - now use magic wand to mask the sky, invert the mask and feather it 1 pixel

3 - next apply USM with settings of 100-200, 0.2, 0

This should bring out the lettering etc. without introducing jaggies - but you'll need to experiment with the correct USM amount.

BTW - nice pic - worth a little extra effort.

As Colin said, use of the masking tool will be essential. Only sharpen the parts that really need it:

- edges around the nose and top of fuselage
- Engine nacelles
- Maybe the tops of the wings.

Nice shot by the way.

The only thing you should feel when shooting a terrorist: Recoil.
