Who Uploads The First Photo From Iraq?

Sat Apr 05, 2003 8:36 am

I am not pressing any A.net photographer to go to Iraq when the war is still going on, but there must be some interesting objects to be found at airfields AFTER the war. That include military also. Soon after the Afghan war some derelict Suchois showed up.
The only picture from Iraq so far on A.net is of a Canberra from 1958!!!

There was a picture in the newspaper today of a 727 blown to bits.... at least I think it was. I only glanced. Could've been a Tu-154 maybe.

Cicada...

Today saw some TV footage and the B747SP and the B727-200 that were recently bought by Iraqi Aws. were at Saddam Int'l airport, intact from what I saw...

The plane that was photographed (see BBC site, look for photos) is apparently an older (original Iraqi) one.. and was even engineless.. this one was indeed destroyed.

I've heard that there's a Twin Pioneer, possibly G-ARBA, that's been seen at Baghdad Airport. Its still as it was before the invasion, but lacks engines etc.
It was damaged beyond repair as far back as 1971, so its a bit of a find!

Its been in a photo in a local Birmingham, England, newspaper.

Is that what that was.

In some of the distance shots on the BBC site that they where using on the header yesterday I saw that.

For a while I thought it was a Bristol......Can't think of the name.

There was one left flying down in BC as late as a couple of years ago.

Damm can't remember the name.

L-188.
I suppose you mean the Bristol 170 Freighter / Wayfarer.
According to the book "Survivors 2002" by Roy Blewett a DH Dove and a DH Heron should be on display at the Military Museum in Baghdad-Muthenda AB.
A HS Trident 1E should be on display in the town of Salman Pak.

According to the civil register besides the Iraqi Airways aircraft the following aircraft are present:
14 PA-18 Super Cubs
4 PA-25 Pawnee B
4 Bell 47G
7 Cessna 150
5 Cessna 172
1 Cessna 210
5 Lockheed JetStar 2
2 DHC-6 Twin Otter
1 FFA AS.202 Bravo
2 Piaggio P.166
4 BN-2 Islander
1 Beagle Pub
2 Antonov 12
4 Antonov 24
1 Antonov 26
19 Ilyushin IL-76
23 Mil Mi-2
4 LET Z-37 Cmelak

My guess will be some peace keeping troopers who brings along a camera will be the first with pictures from Iraq on A.net.

The Iraqis had 4 Bristol 170 Freighters in the Air Force.
2 were withdrawn from service 1954, 1 was scrapped in Ireland in 1969 and the last (serial 369 c/n 13215) was damaged beyond repair in a landing accident in 1967. Maybe the latter exist somewhere.
Iraq have never used the SAL Twin Pioneer.

Yeah that is it, Bristol Freighter.

Thanks. I still think that is what was on the header.

Skymaster et al,

I'm told that the "Twin Pioneer" seen in the Birmingham newspaper had a green cheatline visible and the Iraqi Petroleum Co had such a cheatline and did operate Twin Pioneers, one of which G-ARBA was withdrawn at Basra in 1971. I do not think that there was a Twin Pioneer on the Iraqi register as there were G-.

I haven't seen these pictures myself, but what cheatline has the aircraft you thought mat be a Bristol 170?

This is the picture: http://members.lycos.nl/aviator/cnn-gallery-4-warfare.jpg
It is from CNN, but I can't find it there anymore (probably no longer on line).

And it's definitely a Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer. Compare with these:

Yes it is a SAL Twin Pioneer shown on the picture from Baghdad. It must be c/n 548.
The history on this aircraft is:
First flight 23 February 1961.
Registered G-APVX Iraq Petroleum Transport Company, not taken up.
Store Prestwick
G-ARBA reregistered Scottish Aviation Ltd 18 November 1960.
delivered to Iraq Petroleum Transport Company 28 February 1961.
Damaged beyond repair 44 kms south east of Basra, Iraq 10 January 1971.

Hope this will clear this discussion.
