Easter Afternoon Spotting At JFK...Nice Surprise!

Mon Apr 21, 2003 10:23 am

This afternoon I went to JFK for some spotting and I wanted to find a better spot to get photos. So after driving around for a while I found THE spot!

Well it turns out that Art Brett and Sam Chui were there taking photos. Pretty cool considering that Mirrodie met Art ealier in the day!

Anyway, I had a great time with them, and I hope that it was not a problem that I was there with them!

Thanks for a great time and I hope to sopt with you guys again soon!

P.S. My pics came out great!

Alright Matt tell us where "the spot" is. I went to JFK on Saturday, I guess I should have went on Sunday! I found that Floyd Bennett Field is a great place for 13 arrivals!

Alright, it's not a hidden spot or anything, in fact, it is fairly straightforward.

Let's say you are LEAVING JFK airport. Take the Belt parkway west to Cross Bay Blvd South. Once you come upon a bridge, you go over it and make the first left you can make, on the other side, into a parking lot with a small beach.

Its real easy to see where you are at as the planes will be right there with the tower. Also, you'll see a subway brigde in the mid ground.

peace, m

Matt,

Yes, it was a great day spotting. And, if you're wondering how I could spend the full day spotting at JFK when it was Easter ... easy. 1) I brought Anne along. She enjoys it as much as I do although she might not say so. 2) Sam Chui was inbound from LHR and I was meeting him. So Sam provided, the excuse, and the fact that the Concordes are retiring doesn't hurt.

We had a good day and I met some very nice people, Matt included. And thanks for that thread Matt. It's always nice to be in the field and run into people from our little community.

Mirrodie was also talking about the spot we shot the AF Concorde departure in the early morning while Matt was talking about a spot for 22L approaches. I don't know the exact street names so I'm not posting now, but I'll put it up on my website soon.

Great meeting you Matt. I'm sure we'll do it again someday.

Sorry I don't normally check forum, too many issues with me.

I am real as gold there but not the Concorde in the morning, as I was still at 36000 feet on G-BNLF BA117 inbound JFK. I met Matt and Art in the afternoon at 22L. (I understand Yevgeny took a shot of me)

Here is some EXCLUSIVE shot today, with only myself, no one else to contend. and no other shots to compare. Taken from ERJ spot at JFK, not LGA  Big grin

Sam
Don't ask me why they bank like that, I don't know either but I am happy to shot a few!  Big grin

Is JFK the 2nd Kai Tak now?? (was very lucky, 04L/22R, 04R/22L, 13L/31R all closed this beautiful morning, so only 13R is active for both Arrival and Departures. Planes bank hard because of normally they land 13L, now they closed that one for a while, so planes turn on final for 13R, therefore I was lucky??? prehaps???) Thoughts???

Nice shots Sam!

Yes, often times you'd lose much of the more interesting traffic to the 4s.

Wish I could've been out there with you, Lucky guy!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I saw stuff turning onto 13L for finals are not banking as much as 13R did, and it is far from the Bridge(Cross Bay Blvd) and only 13R arrival are feasible for photos. Anyway, I won yesterday!  Big grin

Sam, the normal approach for 13L does the same you just have to know where to be....(trust me, I grew-up under the approach for 13L)

Michael. I trust you and You're always right  Big grin Got any photos of 13L banking? I saw they bank standing on Cross Bay Blvd, some trees on my left covered the view, prehaps you know where to get them right!
I am out now to JFK/LGA. Its cold today!

I'm sure I have a few old prints of those banks to 13L, I'll have to look for them. Don't have any recent shots as you know I prefer the 50mm rampers  Smile

Don't know how to explain where the turn takes place but it's pretty easy to find just keep an eye on the aircraft.

The place to get the 13L banking is the parking lot of the new Target/Olive garden / Red lobster(off the belt parkway) or to get on top of the garbage dump across the street! Mike your from the area, I forget the name of the road/ exit, do you know it?

The exit you are referring to is Exit 15 on the Belt Parkway, Erskine St. but it's a bit far from the airport and not what I was referring to. Yes, they probably make a turn there as well but also another as they are closer to the approach end of 13L.

How far lens did you use for those pictures Sam? What about the other places, how are they for a 70-300mm lens? What about for takoeffs and runway hold positions?

Hi CcrlR

You can take a 747 or 777 banking within 400mm (on digital) or effectivly it is 600mm on normal SLR with no cropping necessary to make it full frame. You need to stand on the lower half of the bridge and it also depends on where they bank. Some planes bank earlier than others, but they all banks. I didn't find any position holds spot other than 04s. Takeoff 31L Howard Beach, sometimes you need a more than 400mm lens, but with the large format of digital, I am sure everyone can crop to make it tight and full frame right  Big grin

Hope it helps, I will make a mega photo report soon on my experience at JFK spots.
