DVD Hardware Question

Mon May 26, 2003 10:34 pm

Thinking about going to DVD writing capability for photo storage and then thinking about using the writer/player to show movie DVDs as well... the only unknown being...:

are there multi-region playback possibilities as with consumer DVD *players* sold in the UK? There does not seem to ever be any mention of multi-region playback with computer connected DVD players.

I think it should be possible to set your own written DVDs to Region 0, which is readable everywhere.

My only issue with the idea of using DVD-ROMS for data storage is the possibility of damage. Having a lot of movie DVDs myself, I've seen how delicate the damned things are - a lot more than classic CD-ROMS. The slightest scratch and your data's messed up.

Interesting topic. Maybe it'll be the same issue as when comparing smaller CF cards to larger ones, e.g. MD.

When you mess up one DVD, you loose all the pics stored on it. When you mess up one CD-R, you only loose the 650mB or 700mB that were stored on that disc. I'd rather loose one CD-R than one DVD...

But, on the other hand, a DVD has advantages as well, e.g. you only have to write one DVD instead of several CD-R, so for example only one DVD to store all the pics of your recent spotting trip instead of several CD-R (so no more 'LHR May 26th 2003 1 of 3' or so  Wink/being sarcastic
