Chris 1st With MAN Photos

Thu May 29, 2003 6:48 pm

Good to see Mr Sheldon back posting photos again after a 2 month break. He was first to get 28th MAy photos on from the big day at Manchester.

Well done Chris, you must have been up all night!

What a great day it was, everyone spotting around the airfield behaved themselves and even the sun shone most of the day.

There was about 40 aircraft parked up around the taxiways when I left at 6pm. It was a great sight. The beginning of 24L was closed for parking, but aircraft still departed from it using reduced length.

I have some touchdown pics in the queue now where you can see the huge number of people on top of the car park too. Quite incredible. I understand that at one point they closed off access to the roof of the car park because they thought it was unsafe to let any more people up there! (Glad I was well out of the way!)

Wow looks like it was a great day, how many deep was it at the viewing park? And yes all of you there were mentioned on the radio! (Key 103, in one of their jingles) However, they were just saying that if you came to manchester to stay and spot at the airport rather than the footy you are banned from listening.  Yeah sure

A superb day all round. There were thousands of spotters there and thats no exaggeration ( I can't wait to see some pictures of the crowds). It took me over an hour just to que into the viewing park at 06.00 am !!!! Mind you it was worth it. The best days spotting i have ever had in the UK !!!!!! It was like being a kid in a candy store who could buy as much as he wanted.

What with all the charters (Volare,Azzura,Blue Panorama etc etc) and then the normal good MAN traffic (CI 747F , SQ777 , PG F100) plus a mix of 40 odd biz Jets. It made for one hell if a day. I must have made over 100 aircraft , something i have not done in the UK for to many years to say !!!

Will May 28th go down as the best days spotting in the UK ever !!!!

Great Day , Great people , Great weather and great planes !!!! Can we have this every year ????

The authorities even let a restricted number of spectators onto the grass in front of the viewing park for £10! Wonder if any a.net people were amongst them? They put up a small barrier in front of them. The authorities have to be applauded here.

The only problems were a SN319 landing on the runway with a catering vehicle on it causing the next arrival to go-around...... Some aircraft had to wait 2 and a bit hours on remote parking for buses.... plus of course the que into the viewing park (expected)

Here's a shot to give you an idea of the crowds. approx 7:30AM I think. The guys in the van are just putting up the enclosure in front of the fence which opened about an hour later.

Hope you all had a good time guys and got the dream shots you wanted!

Quite incredible really, considering that there were alot of aircraft but none of them were that incredible.

Certainly a nice day for it though, I hope you all enjoyed it.

Did anyone actually get onto the south side at all?

Couple of points about that photo Jason took, firstly it looks like the Neos winglet is about to decapitate the people on the top deck! and secondly the guy at the bottom right of the picture obviously made the wrong decision to get up early and go to MAN  Smile

"There were hundreds on them" . More like thousands !!!! Did anyone take a picture of the crowds from one of the viewing mounds in the AVP. Add to that the fact that the car park was also full. So full infact that the police were worried about safety and asked some of the spotters to bus over to the AVP. I would say that about 100 people were in the field on southside.

Die'ing hobby !!!!!!!!! Not if the 28th is anything to go by . Also alot of people under 30 year old aswell, which was good to see......

Quite amazing really, I remember the first time I visited the AVP at MAN and there were loads of people there, despite the weather at the time.

Chris - were you hassled by police at all whilst on the southside, where did you park?

EGGD: Nothing that good? Try 3 GEX' - I had only seen 1 of them before Big grin Also a BBJ; the Italian Biz was the highlight for me, and those Neos winglet'ted 737's?

Gosh!

I thought the spotters where Chris was were blocked off by a Spanair MD-82 later in the day. Oh well, my view was great - thank God for "Quickseat" foldable chairs.

'nothing that incredable'

-Italian Air Force A319
-Gandalf D328 Jet
-Tui/Futura 737s
-Adriatic MD80
to list only a few...

Where/when else in europe would you see such a collection of aircraft in europe in one day???

Jon

all those were good, but surely the highlight was the East African 767 in that superb scheme.

I was lucky to know someone who has a house backing on to the approach, so I just sat in his garden and admired the scenery. Big grin

You know, maybe i'm different. Because they all look like the same aircraft to me  Laugh out loud.

Maybe if there were a couple of 747's, Airbus A340-600's or AN-124's I could understand the huge number of people going...

We all watched an An-124 and Beluga fly over Manchester en-route somewhere!

An-124's don't do football charters.

Airbus A340-600s are a bit rare at the moment, don't think Virgin would want their new aircraft full of football supporters.

There was something there to please everyone. If you are not a MAN regular it was great to see Cargolux 74F's, Singapore B777's and Air China B74F's -don't see those at LHR!

There were over 300 different aircraft noted yesterday; even those who are regular MAN spotters made over 50 new frames.

Did any of you hang round past 7.45pm to see S5-BAX arrive? Those who stayed at home had a nice day (or not seeing that my work's cut for my movement website!)

WOW !!!

I just watched the soccer game on TV, but oh, I've never seen so much spotters at one place the same time yet...

I'm from INN (Innsbruck) during early February this year we've had about 20-25 spotters from different countries here (Germany and Switzerland mainly )

We were all lined up at the fence for spotting - It was a great view - but as I mentioned - it was nothing againt to this day at MAN....

sorry for my entousiastic story  Wink/being sarcastic

Have a nice day!

Why was everyone gathered at the airport planespotting? Wasn't there some kind of soccer championship game in that town.....seems like more people were there to see the planes than the players!

Here in the usa, at the airport in the city where the Super Bowl is held, and on Super Bowl Sunday, you'd never see even 1/4th of that kind of crowd!!

"Here in the usa, at the airport in the city where the Super Bowl is held, and on Super Bowl Sunday, you'd never see even 1/4th of that kind of crowd!!"

...and I bet they wouldn't take the fences down over there either, so that you could get a better view  Smile
