Slow Screeners.

Sun Jun 01, 2003 4:04 pm

Hello all,

I wonder why screeners work too slow when you have 1 or more photos in the Appeal queue that will be screened by Johan, I got 14 have not been screened yet like 5 or 6 days ago still 3462 photos and 555 Photographs.

Well, they had some people resign from screening job (Colin) and Andy left for a bit, so that might explain it. Otherwise, just hang on, and be patient. I am sure that the queue will be under control in about a week or so.

The upload page doesn't appear to be working at the moment, I keep getting error messages about file extensions, browser out of date...

Checked everything, don't think it's a problem with my set up.

Hi all

With the holiday period approaching, screening can be a little slow as some folks are away.

Yes, with all due respect to the screeners, it's ridiculously slow. A week and a half ago I uploaded a bunch of nice photos from MSP, some that contain the new colors of NWA which are nice, and they have still not been screened yet. By now I expected them to be in the high quality, but I will continue to wait patiently!

Give the screeners some slack. They do it for free and they might have families and other stuff to keep them occupied.

Look at it this way if you have pictures in the queue then you have a place, should you upload more pictures these pictures will be nearer the front.

Won't the new screeners be starting soon?

Well whoever the screeners were who left sure put a dent in the screening times process and it's obvious they did a good job helping. Thanks for the past work you did, good job, you certainly were an asset to A.net and you will be missed.

We'll get there... Screening wait times will always be subject to outside professional and personal influences on the screener's time. As most screeners are based in the northern hemisphere and most photographs are also taken in the northern hemisphere, it is inevitable backlogs will build up from time to time - backlogs that are caused by screeners doing other things like taking vacations or even (perrish the thought!) going out to shoot some pictures, and backlogs resulting from increased submissions during the summer months.

I'd just like to mention, that at best, my screening amounted to perhaps 100 pics a day, so my resignation does not make a significant difference to the back log - its just busy folks, and likely to get busier until the new screeners are operating effectively.

Collectively, the best way to deal with the current backlog is to be very selective in what you upload - send only those which you think might be deserving of a "priority instant add" - there will be opportunity enough to send the rest of your pics later when the new screeners are just sitting sround waiting for something to do.  Smile

Hi all

To re-iterate (correct spelling) what Colin said, pre-screen your own stuff before uploading. It will make a big difference than you just saying 'I will just upload this not so good shot and see what happens'

Doing it this way will probably result in your pics being direct added.

I have been doing quite a bit of that this morning.

Cheers

It's a good bit of advice but surely if we all knew what sort of stuff would get direct adds then we wouldn't need screeners Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I've been very selective with regard to my last batch-and I felt that they all had the potential to be directly added-sadly none of them were.

Self screening is great-but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, not necessarily the screener!

Maybe quality and not quantity is the key to reducing the waiting times, not more screeners. If people did pre-screen instead of uploading everything they took that day then the queue wouldn't be so big and the end product would be of a higher quality.

I just uploaded 3 shots of my dad's and all 3 were direct adds. It does work Smile
I also think you should not upload 20 shots with the thought "well maybe if I'm lucky 2 or 3 might get in". That is wasting the screeners time.

Thanks screeners for an always great Job, even when you reject something Big grin

Obviously you use your judgement, and that's all that can be asked - but this alone would be a big improvement on the practice that a number of photographers use (and even publicly admit to) of uploading everything and "let the screeners sort it out".

I find that 'oldies', and here I mean stuff from the seventies, often get done overnight, but unusually I've been waiting a week or so for my last batch from this era to be done, so maybe the shortage of screeners has had an effect. Hey, but I'm certainly not complaining, as the screeners do this job in their spare time - remember that a number of them may have been at work in front of a PC and then they have our images to look at - lets hope their eyes don't suffer! Yawn

We ought to consider that the screeners are an essential part the process that means that our images are shared through the community, our shots are preserved, and maybe earns us a bit of pocket money if we're lucky. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

By the way, Wietese, my home town of Woking is "twinned" with Amstelveen.

Hi all

The appointment of the new screeners is iminent.
Just awaiting for the mail to be sent to them from Johan.

Hopefully, he will get the mail out before the end of the week and screening with a full team will start over the weekend.

Just a hickup in the screening at the moment........you guys should be grateful.......what would happen if all the screeners decided to book and go a holiday at the same time  Wow!

HI Gary

That's great we are getting a full compliment of screeners again. Don't let the bad emails and the bitching get you guys down.

Life goes on, people go on vacation or get sick. Anet is not the most important thing in life is it? If anyone thinks so the antidote will be coming to Denmark and spending 1 hour in the Nyhavn area, you will forget about A.net as there as so so many beautiful Scandinavian women there to look at.

Gary not allot of folk here understand how much time you guys spend doing this job (for free i may add) Exactly how many hours per week do you spend screening photos and how many hours per week do you spend browsing the site like a normally a.net viewer.

Regards from Denmark

cabbott and gary,

u r totally correct, i c it the same way, screnners spending a lot of sparetime to screen pictures, but on the other hand it must also be fun to screen avation pics from all over the world, and to be "chief" about which pic is goin into the db and which not, anyway i think the queing-time is okay ..... , what i dont understand is , that sometimes pics in the HQ just vanish in air, without an email notice ......

cheers robin

Please have some patience! If you don't have time to wait, send some of your best shots to other sites. I would like to give the screeners a big applaud for their efforts in keeping the quality standard high.

The queue must be big. I've had 70 photos in the queue since Wednesday 28th May (I wasn't at MAN, I was at LHR.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)

Just a quick question, how come it's taking so long, but photos which were taken today have already been added?

Once more: If you are in the que for a very long time, you can be right in front and HQ pics that get screened for the first time can be added pretty quick.

Have they already started 'training' or not?

The email has been sent to the chosen few  Wink/being sarcastic

I think were down to 4 or so screeners at the moment who are active the rest are on holiday etc.

It would be nice if those of you that think its fun to upload a whole landing/take off sequence or a ground shot from every angle would be kind enough to pick your best shot. I have rejected more baddoubles than anything else this past week.

I think we will probably find out quickly who the new screeners are whether we are told about them or not. It is a very good thing that these screeners are making sure to help keep a.net running at practically 24/7.

To the screeners, All I would like to say is a big Thank you for dedicating your time to screen these colossus amount of photos lingering in the queue.
The self-photo screen is a very good idea which would overall lead to much increased chances of direct addition to the site. Especially rare stuff will make it like overnight like Tim's examples.

Screeners, take your time in processing these photos.  Smile Better to have slow and thrill(sp) rather than quick and sloppy. If more vacation and holiday breaks is what you want, got for it.. As long as you don't completely forget that airliners.net is around as well as your regular job.

About the new screeners all I know is I am not one of those, and one of my very good mate did get an offer! I won't say who is that to respect privacy and decision of webmaster here. I hope they can be trained quick and then there will be no more complaints of waiting!

Dan

There will be a training period (if you can call it that) for the new screeners and I am 100% sure that they will do fine.

Once they have all acknowledged that they have accepted Johan's T&C's, the process will begin.

Hopefully, by next weekend, they will be screening.....oh and everyone, no shouting your heads off if some errors are made by the new screeners. We are all human so keep with us through this period.

Again,I think they will do fine.
