"The Parking Spot", North Side Of LAX

Tue Jun 03, 2003 6:44 am

Has anyone shot from the top of the parking deck just west of the In + Out Burger? I went up there yesterday and it looks like a great place for landings and for shots of the plane turning onto the runway. The lot is called the "Parking Spot". $4 per hour to park, or walk up I guess.

I was using a 70-200 with 1.4x and had to take the 1.4x off so I could catch the planes on short, short final. They are almost eyeball height when they pass by. It is truely a "June Gloom" here in SoCal, but hey, it could be snowing!

Oh yea, an update on the "new" Imperial Ave. Hill location. It is still fenced in and under construction, but you can walk around it and shoot from the top of the slope.

Not in the late afternoon. As a matter of fact, JUICY shots can be had from this spot about an hour or so before sunset (provided that there isn't a heavy marine layer).

But for the rest of the day, forget it...

Thanks for the Info update Jeff!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy But did you have any problems with the police or garage attendants???

And yes, you right about the "June Gloom", it's out in full force.  Sad I can only hope that it will be gone by the end of the week, as quite a few "Out Of Towners" will be in to shoot!!

So what does the deck look like at the Imperial Hill ?? I never saw the plans but was told it would be an oval shape that extended out about 10 to 15 feet, am I right??

Thanks again Jeff for the update, and if I have anything to add next week, I will.

Is it okay to leave your car in some place safe, WALK to the good old spot on Westchester/Northside Pkwy, since I saw they made some road blocks to prevent car go in there, if you just walk there and stand near there, prehaps is okay? That was the best lighting spot for the afternoon in summer!

While this isn't an example of a shot taken from the In and Out location, this is an excellent representation of the late afternoon summer sun at LAX. This shot was taken from the north side of the runways, which isn't possible any other time of year:

Sam,

It's been quite a while since I've been to Northside Parkway so I really couldn't say. But the street that turns into Northside Parkway is Loyola Blvd. and is a great place to park, just head North on Loyola and find a place to park, then walk back down to either Northside or Westchester Parkway. If you have problems (police) with Northside, try walking East on Westchester Parkway until you find a good spot to shoot the 24's. Take a look at this link.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?dtype=s&mapdata=jZ2g%2b%2fXW8V8YetgIUtvDEqBpQlyoniwYN%2fHSW5%2fbJ4XDkJJZY8ksCAPH9HDOvhQ%2f624cULLg1epVSGNOhRB%2bVD%2bYuhtvabjjifzBT4gTgiSWOxvWxiMwgcOvjKfv9kJklflVS0AndqUHhTJmmKzWMfXB4voUQS3fNanJil2serRUZ8fgYjyCPlPeKpXYSd3hkJJpsxHNUFP%2bOP%2bkvnOWZSruKqe2e0L222u2wbYhvbzzfCvsgnFJWayhL1JaNtxLJHw0ifCx0hnVa78r4Ld3LSlorI5MekPJwROKxrxhfK3JYg6svadZi1o4GH6yTN55GjWjDRNc%2fENpaRm3PHbGPXE0PyID4mqggEhe4mUgy3q%2fX2NnFqp%2ffcp61pATJMMJRBTpzG4g5fO7ZaVFdNuhrJn1tWKeEMNS3b%2fxoN3LRBcr73kLJTYM4l29TjTNSF%2fmGUHpDf2Yo8OT2CZGWyr8a%2bAR4EOojKXCvuEekR7JkdkAQVmyEeuhtrY6U2ooYXJTAjhN94g8dhvNfBM%2b6yejZw%3d%3d

Just remember that June 21st (Summer solstice, Longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere) is the best day of the year to shoot the 24's, but, and a BIG but is, the thick marine layer that hugs the coast this time of the year is a real hindrance to taking those well lit shots of the 24's.

thanks for the map, Loyola that is! I know that thick marine layer. Quite a few Cargo 747F arrive late after 6pm, it is the problem to get it good. I remember I used to go there a lot wait for the UA Worldwide Cargo DC-10-30F to arrive from ANC in 99 and 2000.

It should be worthwhile to go back Westchester to see how things go. Prehaps ride a bike or walk should be okay with Police, they always seems more concerned whats in the vechile.

I had no problems with the police (did not see any) and I did pay to park, so the attendants did not complain.

Royal,
the sun is not great, but late in the day it's not too bad.

Your right Andy! If you try, you can get some Beautiful shots from the In and Out and surrounding locations. And yes that little grassy bank is great, but it would even be better if you had a little step ladder to use on it. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Also, Thanks Jeff for the info on the parking garage.......

Anyone up for any spotting tomorrow June 4 or Thursday June 5???....I was thinking of flying in midafternoon - catch the sun at its best - then go home....Well Im sure there would be a double double involved too at some point....

Also what time is best for the sun at Proud Bird?

Ryan,

Sorry to say, but I just saw the 5 day forecast and it doesn't look good. Sad
There's low pressure parked over the middle of California and it keeps the marine layer pumped deep into the local (30 miles or so) valleys. Sad It's really ashame as a few of my A. net. friends will be arriving around the weekend.

If you would like a hourly update of LAX, take a look at the link below.

Do you think Imperial Hill will be open by the 4th of July? I have to make the trek up to LAX to pick someone up on the 3rd so may as well occupy myself.  Smile

Ryan,
The Proud Bird is best in the winter, with a low sun angle from the south. To push it even further - it's best from midday thru the afternoon, when aircraft noses are lit by sunlight and not cast in shadow.

A bunch of us Arizona guys will be over for the LAX Expo, 21Jun. If the weather's good, you'll see us all over that north side.

Tony,

Take a look at the top of this thread, Jeff said it's possible to shoot from there even though it's still under construction. I will be there at the end of this week, so I will report back later.

Also, as Terry said, the best time for the South side (25's) is in the winter. Right now the sun sets high in the Pacific Northwest making it the best time of the year to shoot the 24's, that is if the marine layer will ever go AWAY!  Sad

Paul,

I am far too lazy to walk around barriers!!! I want solid comfort when I shoot! Sun may be in the wrong place, but if I gotta drive up there anyway it is worth a stop.  Smile

Tony,
If your not going to get out of the car at Imperial, don't bother. There is a tall chain link fence covering the entire "sweet spot" of the hill. You can however walk around it!

I would suggest the north side and the 24's late in the afternoon. Went yesterday as the gloom burned off and it was great!
