A.net Meeting At LHR 12-13/07?

Mon Jun 30, 2003 6:50 pm

Last month, I was told by 707cmf that an a.net photographer meeting was going to be held at LHR for the weekend of July 12th/13th. So I broke my piggy bank, phoned up old realtives and searched through my girlfriend's purse in order to find the necessary funds for a DUB->LHR return ticket. However, after seeing him at LBG for the airshow, I was told that 'not so many people could turn up after all'.
So did I give up a GP weekend and spend all my drinking money for nothing ? what will really happen at LHR ? my only consolation is that 707cmf, being in the 26-35 age group, paid at least twice more for his ticket than I did  Laugh out loud

The meeting was discussed in that topic :

Not that many people are going, but it still should be interesting

Hi guys,

I just booked my flight and hotel at LHR. I will arrive on Saturday July 12 at 17:00h and depart on Sunday July 13 at 17:55h. I will stay at the Renissance hotel. Other a.net members who will be there are Alex (Ndebele), Frederic (Sabena 690) and several other spotters from Belgium.

It would be nice when we could meet there!

For myself, I'll arrive at LHR at 1745 the Saturday, and depart the Sunday at 17h55. Any chance we are on the same flight out ? I fly LH via FRA.

So... Anybody knows a cheap and convenient hotel at LHR ?
(And no, don't ask how you spell cheap in Swedish!)

I will undoubtedly be working on Sat 12th but the Sunday is okay for me if this get together needs a token Englishman.

Turbotrent will be there as well.

At LHR, I only care for one thing: to get the Concorde into my viewfinder as many times as possible*. I don't care how many miles I'll have to walk/crawl/whatever...

Hope to see all of you then!

Ivan,

Wow, 10 persons already. I suggest we make some reservations for a nice restaurant somewhere around LHR for a large table somewhere between 5h30 PM and 8h00 PM local time. I'm pretty much convinced we won't miss that much aircraft traffic at that time anyway  Wink/being sarcastic Big grin

woh woh woh, I'm all for that, but make it not before 6h30 PM, as my plane is not supposed to land before 5h55 PM

And.. anyone knows a good and cheap hotel at LHR ? I have the idea that the Rennaissance will not be that cheap (and I'll keep asking until I get an answer)

Antoine: best (but expensive!) is the Renaissance Hotel. Try expedia in France (probably www.expedia.fr ?) for rates, otherwise go to http://www.accorhotels.com and select the Ibis Heathrow Hotel (I believe the code is 0794). They ask 49.95£ for a double room...

I'll have to see that with UTAflyinghlow, because we shall most probably share the room (not the bed ! I'm a pilot, not a steward  Wink/being sarcastic ), but although the price is okay by me, it will probably be too much for him (we've nicknamed him Uncle Scrooge McDuck / (Onc'Picsou for the French speakers)).

Any perks making it worth taking that hotel ? (like right under the glide path)

hey 707cmf, if it's 50 each Uncle Scrooge says fughetaboudit, but if it's 25 each (50 for the whole room) that's exactly what I stole from my GF's housekkeping money this month. I'll go see the Akkor website (they give me more miles when I use my AF/Amex card, did u know ?

Very good idea, but as Antoine already mentioned, after 6:30pm because I will also arrive in the evening. Does somebody know a good restaurant near LHR?

We should exchange our mobile phone numbers by eMail, when somebody does not know where the others are, he can simply call and the others can tell him where they are. That is the best way to find each other in my opinion, it worked on every a.net meeting.

Frederic, I will call you when I arrived to ask where you guys are, is your mobile phone number still the same?

Well, as Patrick (Sabena332) arrives not long before me on another LH flight, I suggest LH arrivals as a meeting point for a few of us between 17 and 18 pm.

I'll give you later my flight numbers, in case my flight is delayed (I will try to provoke a go around if I can jumpseat  Wink/being sarcastic just kidding)

I'm sure we can find a perfectly good restaurant in LHR. In the case it is in the restricted area, well, there is no way I go to McDo. If I have one fastjunkfood there, let it be at least a Burger King !
Otherwise, as a few of us will be staying at the Renaissance, we could eat out at that hotel restaurant, whatdyathink ?

Antoine, just out of a PPL-written revision hour (d-13 in a few minutes - if I can register in time)

And yes, I'll be with Frederic and Tom, so no need (yet) to give you guys my cellular phone number huh?  Wink/being sarcastic

I think Concorde (Speedbird 2, I'm afraid, Speedbird 1 lands at Noideawhen in JFK  Big grin )is meant to land around 5pm, but it's always a bit late.

The question is: On what days is there a Concorde service in the summer? I know in winter they fly to Barbados once a week and only 6 times to New York - is summer service 7 days a week or 6?

Where is everyone meeting? If runways 27L/R are in operation I suggest the Visitor Centre Car Park (right by the Renaissance Hotel) to get a good view of 27R where BA002 will be landing and BA001 taking off.

Just back from a little warm-up spotting with Md-11er, his girlfriend, and a non-forum member of a.net in FRA (5/6 july)  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Now ready for the real work: LHR Big grin (just kidding, FRA took my breath away, what an amazing terrace!!  Wow! And how spottersfriendly - did anyone of BAA ever visit FRA?)

I agree that the parking is the best spot for landings in the afternoon, maybe me and Ivan+Tom can go there already if traffic stops landing at 27L?

About the parking: can you just go there and stand there for a whole afternoon/evening? Do you have to pay a fee-is it permitted without a car?

Regards
Frederic

Guys,

I can confirm that my Image Tank is up and running... Did a final test on my girlfriend' PC and now I'm sure it works (it refuses to work on mine) --> 20gB available for nothing else but pics (I'll be able to shoot approx. 10.000 pics  Big thumbs up )

Like 707cmf said, I'm Scrooge McDuck so I booked the el cheapo flight that leaves DUB at 0640 and arrives at 0840. So I'll be bored as a dead rat until the next person shows up. Does LHR have any WiFi hot spots ?
