Need A Digital Camera, What's Best For Spotting?

Sat Jul 05, 2003 12:46 pm

I am looking to buy a digital camera but don't really know what to buy but it has to be at least 3mp with a good zoom.

What are you using????????

Any info is greatly appreciated.

The biggest question is how much are you looking to spend....After you say that, the advise will roll in for you.

Price range

Around 500 - The olympus C-740/C-750

More than that or no budget - a DSLR

I am looking to spend about $1000.00 cad. I don't want a DSLR due to the size.

Thanks

1000 CAD = £445 ish boys, or $745 or €650  Big thumbs up

I'd say the Sony F717 or Fuji S602.

I agree on the Sony F717, I have one and I am very pleased with it! You might want to look out for the accesories though! They are very expensive, a spare battery will go for just under 100 euro, 128mb memory stick for just over 100 euro etc.

If you have $1000 to spend, why wouldn't you want a DSLR? They aren't that cumbersome to carry around. I would just think its a waste of money to spend that on a camera you can only do half as much with. You can get a D30 on ebay now for like $700-800 and still have enough left over for a decent lens.

Because in Canada a D100 retails for $2700.....

For about $1000 I would look at the Olympus C-730//40/50...the latter two are new additions, and should be around 1000. Really good, compact cameras, that alot of people use....I used to have a C-730 before I moved onto a D100.

"For about $1000 I would look at the Olympus C-730//40/50."

This is currently my preffered camera but I don't know how they handle at night or in low light situations around the airport.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Low light does tend to be an issue with the camera....personal expieriance. As for night photography it has a "Night" setting that does wonders, just check out some of Kevin Wachters incredable photos from Edmonton.

I bought a 740UZ about a month ago and love it ($499 US) at BestBuy.
Great little camera and I am having very good luck with aviation action
shots. The newer 750UZ averages about $100 US more and moves up
from 3.2 to 4.0 Megapixles and adds sound to the movie mode.
The best part about these two camera's is the great zoom, the
all-important optical Zoom is equivalent to 380mm.
Good luck to you 1world

Adds sound to the movie mode? My C700 has sound in movie mode!

C720 is what I use. Optical zoom is less (8x - 320mm), and only 3mp. No night shot mode either. Get a C750 is you have $1000 to spend.

How does the Olympus 700 series do in non spotting applications? I have a Coolpix 3100, which my mom really likes, and is thinking of buying. Instead of her getting a second one I was thinking of giving her mine and picking up one of the Olypuses. I love my coolpix, but it only took me one trip to the airport to start lusting after some REAL optical zoom. My only question is how well the Olympuses work for indoor or other stuff. Some of the reviews on DPreview.com were less than glowing, especialy for the earliar models. Is this a shortcoming of the camera or just an indication of the user's ineptitude?

thanks,
