How Much Time Do You Spend On This Hobby?

Thu Jul 10, 2003 4:41 pm

I was looking at the search page and the "top uploaders"...submitting 20, 25, 30 or more photos at one time.....that seems like a lot of time to spend. A lot of time preparing the photos, finding the info, uploading....

How much time do you all spend doing this? How often do you shoot? Do you edit or scan and edit photos every single day? I imagine some of you actually have a life and a family outside of the airport, right?? LOL

I dont usually shoot every day or every week (maybe 1 or 2 shots though, sometimes) and my "big shoots" are once a month or less...and that yields 200 or 300 pics that can take up to a month or more to completely go thru. I still have 100 left from CLT. I cant imagine shooting every week and having a "backlog" of hundreds or 1000s of photos!!!

I know from the photo stats page that there are over 100 photographers ahead of me, and they've been ahead of me for a long time - so they must be adding more stuff to stay up there. so, I know a lot of you do massive amounts of photos.....

It all depends if you're bored as a dead rat at your workplace with a lot of backlog of pics (ex:me). Now I still have to write a program that :
a) automatically senses when I am about to get bumped out of the queue
b) prepares pics and comments
c) uploads them
d) appeal some of them
e) click on them every now and them to increase my popularity  Laugh out loud

Well, sometimes, I can find ways not to lose any time at uploading pictures on A.net .

Right now, I am stuck at a boring office daily meeting. Those meetings used to be hold in a dedicated meeting room, but yesterday I've complained to my boss that the room was not large enough for 12 people. So from now on, those meetings are held in the main office, and I can remain in front of my computer, listen an participate, but also upload pics to A.net.

As for shooting aircrafts, I usually keep my camera with me, and often stop by the airport when I drive past it, or when I go flying.

Ooh for a busy airport?

Auckland is not exactly the busiest airport around and the selection of aircraft or airline is quite limited, and then of course one has to beat the other spotters to the draw to get some on A.net. I have even travelled to Whenuapai in the hope I might get a shot of the RNZAF Boeing 757 but alas it was not there and that airport is on the list to be closed in 5 years time at the most. Thats life I guess, just as well Ive got some screening to do and at least I see some of the superb shots that all you other contributors upload. So keep em coming everybody.  Smile

I don't spend much time at my local airports at all now. Probably because my aim is to get a decent photo of one livery/type, and there is only so much at LHR, although I do need one or two special marks and things like the Malev -800.

I tend to do most of my shooting abroad. If I go to Paris or Dusseldorf, I hope I can catch up with some of the UK stuff, but its a break away from this place too.

I used to go out shooting a lot more, but as you get older, you realise there are other things to do (both chores and leisure). However, there are not many evenings when I do not have a.net on or am doing some scanning of old slides.

Don't spend much time at all spotting, maybe once every 3-4 months. Spend alot of time looking through photos on A.net and helping people with rejections + posting on the forums.

Since I've got the "top uploader" honors for the past year I think I might be qualified to provide an answer to your question. Yes, I spend a lot of time processing the pictures to upload on A.net. Probably way more than I should, but it's a function of my job. Things have been rather slow at work and I've found that I have to much extra time which I fill processing pictures. And, when I am working I'm usually away from home stuck in a hotel during the evenings and what can you think of better to do than process pictures for A.net? Keeps me busy and out of trouble, two pluses!

Actually I've only re-engaged in this hobby after a 30-year absence and I have enjoyed every minute of it since. I've spent quite a bit of time spotting at several airports here and abroad, and I've met many wonderful people along the way. I've spotted at JFK much more than what I would think is normal because of the many who have contacted me wanting to get pictures of the retiring Concorde. That's drawn me out for a day's shoot and more pictures to process. I suppose if work picks up I will have to slow down, but I'll keep plugging as best as I can. Now, if I could only capture the "Most Popular" for the past year that would be something.

Well its the summer so I have plenty of free time away from school and the busyness. Although sometimes you just hate to scan more images but the only reason you do is to share them online on sites such as these (I still have some from early this year I haven't messed with yet!). I really wish I could get an airport job in my small town...
