All depends on how close you can get...
For that money you'd better get a good SLR and a decent lens.
Nikon F65 + 70-300mm IF-ED Nikkor would probably be within your budget.

Yeah, but then you'd have to get a film scanner or a scanner for that SLR. Plus you need to keep spending money on the film! If you screw up on a shot, you CAN'T go back, unlike with digital, where you can go back!

You might want to look in stores and online, also, I got my Sony 707 for 500$ online...

I recommend Sony's 707/717 Olympus's C-730/740/750. Both have high optical zoom that is good for shooting at the airport without ramp access. If you are thinking of getting Olympus, I would suggest the C-740/750 because they have the ED lens that the C-730 lacks. It helps reduce purple fringing which plagued the earlier models.

Cheers,

I think that a Sony F717 would be the best one for you. As an amateur photographer, I own a Sony F717 and I am still learning how to take photos of the airplanes. Once my photography skills are improvement in a couple of years (up to 2 years), then I would buy a Canon 10D.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
