Zooming On In Coming Aircraft

Mon Jul 28, 2003 2:51 pm

Is there any trick to get all of a incoming airscraft from the side. I shoot a lot of 737's from the side and know that it is about 175mm from where I shoot from but say I am trying to get a 747-400 from the side and I have not had exprience doing this. Is it just trail and error.

trial and error i guess. i try to get lanes when they are a bit further out on final. but my camera does not zoom quick enough to get them at the side. any advise for me?

hey paul, there really is no magic number, it is always variable if the plane is moving toward or away from you. it depends how close you are. Sometimes I tend to not go in tight enough because I fear "losing" the plane but I really should zoom in more. it is tough when the plane is moving. I would say you'd have to be wide when a 74 is coming. I have shot 747s side shots at 56mm but that was straight on the side.

Best advice is get in as tight as possible. But then, if you fill the whole frame and then find later you need to slightly rotate it to level the horizon you're screwed because you'll end up cutting off a piece of the horiz. stabilizer or wing tip.

That's one reason the SLR is best for plane shooting. Some of those small cameras with the electric/servo zoom just are not fast enough.
