I'm Buying A Digital Camera - Which Is The Best?

Fri Aug 22, 2003 12:42 am

I am planning on buying a digital camera.

As far as I am concerned, quality is more important than price, although less than $1000 would be nice.

Basically, I would like to be able to take large pictures at high resolution, and also have a good range of optical zoom.
These are the two most important features for me, but possibility of large capacity would also be an advantage, thus a microdrive may be better than memory sticks.

Any advice as to which make/model would give me the best balance between these requirements?

There is no 'best'...

Advise: stick with the major traditional camera brands, especially Nikon and Minolta (unless you want to spend serious money on a DSLR Canons just are bad).

For your budget a Coolpix 5400 or better 5700 would be a good choice, or a Minolta dImage 7Hi.

Jwenting is correct in a way, but I would also like to add that a camera is not better then the person who stands behind it, no matter what the damn thing costs.  Big grin

Some of our friends here have the newest and "biggest" there is on the market, but that's also because there skill requires it. They have done this for a long time, and they need the built in tools that the S2, D-60, 10D, 1D etc. etc. have.

I sure would not say no to D-60, but I also know that I have no use for it. Simply because I'm not that good (yet).

I have no doubt that you will find a camera fits you requirements.

When in doubt, flat out!

As Jwenting said a nikon Coolpix 5700 or the Minolta DiMAGE 7Hi would suit your needs very well

Nikon Coolpix 5700 Review;

(The nikon is the better of the two  Laugh out loud)

Minolta DiMAGE 7Hi Review;

By the way Compact flash can have larger capacities than MicroDrive, so if you are looking at max. memory go for the 6 gig compact flash models which cost about the same as a Kia.

Take a look at the other thread regarding a new Canon DSLR that is "entry level."

Thanks for all the advice, guys!

Great site you recommended, by the way, Pilothighflyer. I think this will answer most of my questions.

I did not see anybody mention the Sony F717. I just got that one myself a month ago and I love it. It is also in your price range at $799.00. It has 5.24 megapixles and a 5X optical zoom. The lens is a Carl Zeiss too. It is a great camera.

Don't mess about with all those kiddie-cams people are mentioning - sooner or later you'll grow out of them. Now there's a sub-$1000 D-SLR on the way, there's only one choice - Canon 300D.
