Lens/Filter Cleaning & Cleaning Fluids

Mon Sep 01, 2003 3:49 am

Interesting one I hope.

What do you use to clean your lens?
Do you clean lens filters or shouldn't I bother?
Do you use a cleaning fluid for lens or filter cleaning?

Reason why I ask, is that I purchased a lens cleaning kit from a leading photographic supplier and have the following concern.

I used the cleaning fluid, alcohol based, from the kit to clean some moisture spots from a lens filter and I think in the process of wiping the excess cleaning fluid from the filter, it has left scratches on the surface. I don't know an awful lot about filters, hence my questions re lens cleaning in general.

Regards, Tim.

The fluid should not scratch anything. Always start by blowing/brushing off the largest pieces of grit. (Avoid compressed air to do this. Just the little blow brush that probably came with your kit, or one that you can pick up cheap at a photo store.)

NEVER use paper towels etc...to clean a lens. You will wind up with scratches that way. Use a soft cloth and the cleaning fluid and you will be fine. Remember to use a light touch.
