LGA Getting Boring

Mon Sep 08, 2003 12:53 pm

does this happen to anyone else? i sat and watched approaches for a few days now from the college of aeronautics tower. then i realized i was reading a magazine i had brought with me. usually, i can watch air traffic for hours. i guess i'm bored with it already. is this normal? i honestly can see why i would be getting bored. it's mainly erj after erj, with an md-80 or 737 sometimes.

Actually, I'd say LG ais getting exciting again.

You've got Delta that brings in two 764s a day.

ATA now bringing in ATA 757's regularly, and even the 300 version.

Frontier bringing in the A318 starting I believe September 14th.

Midwest 717s a lot more.

AA retiring their F100s soon, so enjoy them while you can.

The UN Security Council in a few weeks will bring nice foreign panes into NYC fomr all over the world. LGA will probably catch the nice USAF blue scheme jets.

There's even more. I dont know, but this stuff is exciting to me. Maybe you've not as big of an aviaiton enthusiast as you think? :-p

Don't forget Song with there brightly painted 757's. While many don't like the color scheme at least it's something different and new, and they have around
14 flights a day. Also LGA is getting busy again, Sunday afternoon the weather was great, the configuration was land 31, depart 4, and the taxi-out times (pushback to wheels up) were around 40 mins all afternoon and around an hour from 6 to 9 p.m. that's a lot of aircraft in line for departure and they all taxied right by the College of aeronautics tower for your viewing pleasure.

I was there on Saturday, and theres no doubt the aircraft made for nice viewing pleasure from the College tower, but unfortunately it was a 45 second decision by security to let me use the mens' room, so, the tower was not an option that day.  Sad

LGA has always been boring overall; it definitely affords an opportunity to go do lunch for an hour and then return in the almost certain knowledge that you haven't missed anything. Those regional jets are a blight for the enthusiast.

For years I lived where I could watch the LGA approach (two of them) on a daily basis..and the only time I can remember being shocked was seeing an Air Canada Tri-Star flying past over Brooklyn. (turned out to be operated by Eastern I believe), but there's good stuff and surprises there from time to time; just have to be very patient. Also, good and relatively close viewing angles. And, too, right now for example, its the only place we can see Frontier and Tango in these parts and where you can usually see the Trump 727.

AA isn't retiring their F100s until 06 I believe.

No kidding. I recently spent the day taking photos at ORD, and I must say that it was of the most boring spotting experiences of my life. RJ after RJ after RJ after RJ with an occasional MD80 or 737 thrown in. Sure, ORD does get some interesting international traffic, but my god...that airport is being overrun by damn RJ's.

If you spend enough time at or near LGA there is interesting stuff. For example today (Sept 8th) there is a Miami Air 738 with winglets, I did not even realize they had 738's with winglets, anyway its at Signature (Five Towers) and I here its going to be here a few days.

LGA may not have the heavies, and its regular schedule for thignsmay make it somewhat boring at tiems, I think it makes up for it with that fact that its easy to spot LGA form all sides of it with nice angles that you can't get at most US airports. Not to mention the skyline views you can get.
