Planning A Trip To NYC, JFK/EWR/LGA

Thu Sep 18, 2003 6:37 am

Hello NYC locals,

I am planning a trip late this september or early october to the states, New York to be exact.

I am looking partcularly at the weekend of the 27th of september. Is anyone of you free to show me some cool spots? (Howard Beach for instance) I wont be having any transportation, so any help I can get is very welcome. Plus it would be nice to meet some of you in person.

When does the Concorde take off? I am very interested in getting that one as it stops flying soon...

Greetings from AMS,

Okay, New Yorkers, where is that 777 touching down? I suppose probably 4R? If so then no, you can't go there. But when they're landing on 22L you used to be able to get good shots with 85-135 mm lenses from Rockaway Blvd (?) maybe a 2 km walk from the bus stop. No idea whether they chase you away now.

Weitse I would be happy to offer you the services of my car to get around, I know a lot of the local spots, and hopefully I will get the chance to meet some of the "locals" also seeing as I was so close a few weeks ago and didn't even know. Or if there is going to be another get together of the NYC photogs I would like to attend. So if I can be of any help to you on your trip please don't hesitate to ask.

I am in NY now, today and yesterday have been absoluty beautiful, done very well shot all my CF card to full size each day. Love all the turns. You will enjoy here Wietse, I am sure plenty of NY guys will come out for you.

SSC takeoff 9am every morning except one day (Sun? or Sat? I am confused on this) You can listen frequency 135.05 for clearance and still have 20+ mins to drive to the spot to catch, thats how I manage to catch it no matter where it takoeff (see my Concorde ops screwed up post)

There are plenty of good spots around, I hate they using 4s, but each afternoon around 2-3pm, they seems opened back the main rwy, today were landing 13L/13R takoff. Yesterday 31s. I got cops around me twice last 2 days, but no big deal I already got used to those hassle although they are polite enough and one of those recognise me I was there in April (Nassau County and NYPD)

Also here is some ways you can get to Bayswater Park for 4L/Rs, 22R takeoff or 13R heavy takeoff. Looks bit messy but it had been proved practical by A.net famous photog Jean who was here few days ago

To go to the Bayswater State Park from the JFK airport, you will take
Yellow/Blue/White Bus going to the Long Term Parking Lot which eventually bring
you
to the Haward Beach Subway Station (free ride, every 20 min in a daytime).
Then, you will take a Subway A (Southbound) and get off at the final station, Far

Rockaway ($2.00 one way). The subway station is located right in front of the
Mott Av. Thus, all you have to do is to walk along the Mott Av. approximately
20 min (1.5 mile) toward the West end of the street. The gate will be in front
of you. The Subway A lines named 8th Avenue Express will directly bring you
to the Penn Station and Port Authority Bus Terminal (42th street) which is very
useful. Also, this subway makes a rapid service between Manhattan and Haward
Beach so that it takes within an hour between Lower/Mid Manhattan and Far
Rockaway.

Wietse,

If you'll be here on the weekend I might be available. During the week is tough as I work, same reason why I haven't been able to meet-up with Sam.

feel free to shoot me an email with your plans.

oh, and if you take sam's advice on a-train to mott av, please be sure to leave well before dark....that area isn't the best to hang out with $$$ worth of camera equipment.

sorry that 777 spot is not from the outside but i'd be happy to show you the spots i know.

Hi Wietse

This is off-topic, but it's damn important. There are new rules, when you are traveling to US. Some info here:

http://www.usembassy.dk/index.php?o=ca0c24f5e4fdce37ecd8aa4b762da747
http://www.usembassy.nl/main.htm

It would be annoying, if you didn't fulfill the requests, and you are in the airport.

Have a nice trip

I know that area can be dodgy. I was there until 7pm, lot of guys came in to the park to fish there after work. The problem with Mosquito are worse there, as they come around bite me everywhere. I do have a rental car which make things lot easier, yesterday made it to LGA form JFK in 12 mins!!, I have plenty of fun and really busy, met quite many guys like Bob Trader, Senga Butts around....I am leaving Sat 7am now so I won't see you this time Mike. but I am sure there will be next time around. Hope the weather stays good to you, I am going out now to see Concorde if takes off 4L today as it is windy.

Wietse Enterprise rent car to 21-25 with no surcharge age fee. Howard Beach can be also accessible from Howard Beach JFK Subway station but it is fair walk. I actually found the Howard Beach parking spot boring now as you can only get a few turnings on heavies as Jet Blue A320 or AA A300 are a bit high at times passing there. If things are taking off 4L, I found a great turning spot you can get most planes turning at right height and time, near Brookville Blvd residential area.

Wietse,

I would LOVE to meet youa nd show you around. I can show you JFK pretty well, but I OWN LGA and can get you amazing shots no matter what teh weather or runway usage may be.

EWR blows, you don't want that anyway. lol.

Vasco,

We are probably flying on Delta AMS-JFK-AMS, why not join in on us.

Others,

It all depends now on how soon I can get my passport. I still only have a European ID, that cannot get me to the states. So I'm applying for a passport tomorrow, but it will take a week. If I can get it sooner we will come the weekend of the 27th, if not its postponed a week. Will let you know when I get the answers..

Thanks for all the offers btw, appreciate it.

Wietse,

It would be great to meet you for shooting some Concorde shots. Unfortunately the times you've picked are not good for me. The weekend of the 27th I'll be in Heaven shooting Frontier tails in Denver and the week of Oct. 4th St. Marten. If you come after the 11th let me know and we can meet.

I'm sure some of the other guys who have responded will show you a good time and some good spots to catch her. Good luck.

Hello Guys,

Depending on the need for a Visa for my travel companion, the trip will be either the weekend of the 27th or the 1st one in october.

Probably arriving friday @ 1000AM on SQ 24. Is there anyone that can pick us up at the hotel on friday? (after us dropping our bags off there) Or if possible on saturday morning early enough to go and see Concorde? Any help in this area would be superb, as I dont have a driverslicense and dont know how to get to certain places..

Does anyone have a suggestion for a reasonably priced and a well-positioned hotel? (For outings around JFK)

Thanks,
Wietse
