Repitition Or Variation?

Fri Sep 26, 2003 11:05 am

i think the answer to the question is easily going to be variation, but ill take a shot at it, anyway.

when i check out the latest additions to the db, theres often a stream of 1,0 20, or even 30 photos from one photographer. its easy to tell that they were all taken from the same spot, due to the fact that theyre all depicting the plane at the same angle. the only thing different in each one of the shots is the airline or aircraft.

then, there are the ones that picture one thing, then go off onto a different perspective, or area all together. hard to explain. maybe some visual stimulation would help  Big grin...

-these are taken from the latest additions, and are not meant to bash or suck up to certain photographers-

granted that some of these are taken on different dates, but for arguments sake, forget about that lol.

so, as i said before, im guessing that people appreciate variation every once in a while. comments? opinions?

i try never to upload more than 10 pics at the same time, and also i try to mix them with date, position , etc ........ , also i found out, that , if you load up 35 pics at the same time, some goodies tend not to get the attention they deserve ....

Depending on the airport sometimes there are only so many spots to photograph from. Some spots can only give you a certain angle. In photographing aircraft you take what you can get (well, unless you work on the "inside" and can plan to photograph a certain plane at a certain time from a certain spot)

What I do though is take several snaps of each plane. That way, the best one may or may not be from the same "angle" as the previous one. That is what i did at CLT and my CLT uploads represent a range of different angles but you still cant help shooting planes from the same angle.

As a screener, you notice these things - some photographers will upload a few pictures from a shoot, and then leave uploading any more for quite some time, maybe even months. And then they'll add a few more, and wait again. In the mean time, they upload a few from other places, other locations.

Some of the regulars have this figured out, others haven't. But, my experience is that if you upload a string of pics at one time all looking similar, they generate far less interest than if you drip feed them into the queue over a period of time, and mix the variety up a bit with different views and different locations.

I'm slightly curious as to why you picked on me:

Taken from my last 10 uploads (aside from the two you chose):

I would not personally have called that too much repetition.

I guess it should be noted that when people visit airports away from their regular haunt, it's often tough to go off finding different spots, especially if they are in a different country.
Also it's not always possible to drip in uploads constantly, sometimes the pressures of time mean you have to upload what you can when you can.

(Apologies for the grotesque plugfest......purely for illustration only!)

Hi all

I like variation and when I remember, I stagger the images with different views, directions etc.

Cheers

Read my "Europe vs. US" thread as we tough on this subject a bit.

It's a tough decision to make. I mean, you'd want to get as many of your pcis up on the site as fast as you can for exposure if youare looking to make sales, but you might also want to only put up the best from the that day to build a rep of quality photographs.

Depends on why you're here.

in the beginning i tried to get every pic on A.net ..... , but now, I am really looking to pic out very few from a day, only the good ones, and perhaps rare ones make it ..... , also i try to keep some summer quality shots for the winter  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
it drives me mad, if you have a great shot, and it ends up in 250 accepted shoots close before midnight ---> when people wake up in europe the pic is then allready far in the db ..... ,i think american guys like more american stuff, and european, european stuff ...... , soi try to load my pic up while europe is awake .....

i have to do a plug  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

above pic was directly added to the db around 23:00 ........ , for me it is very special, cause i guess 9V-SML is allready out of service ..... , only 114views, and allready deep in the db. an other prob is that A.net thinks its allready at least 24 hours in the db, cause it was accepted short before 24:00 :-(

what do you guys think?

Aha... Another one who's realised! Big grin Aside from limiting your uploads, always hope that the screeners accept your image just after midnight or very early in the morning, central Europe time - best time for getting noticed / getting more hits!!!

"...always hope that the screeners accept your image just after midnight..."

I try to use that "technique", it's something at my availability so I use it, don't have a problem admiting. I just hope screeners doesn't delay my uploads because of this.

lol anything for a few more hits, eh? i would have used my own pics, but figured 1) id be modest, and 2) theyre just too professional and popular that advertising them would be pointless  Smile/happy/getting dizzy  Wink/being sarcastic
