My Turn, My Very First Photo Request.

Wed Oct 08, 2003 10:38 pm

Hi guys,

got this email this afternoon:

"I would like to request the use of your photo as ID'd above. We are a pilot
training facility that trains this type of aircraft. As a courtesy to our
clients we make them luggage tags that display the type of aircraft they fly. I
would like to use your photo for this purpose.

Please let me know if this would be ok."

And here is the photo:
http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?id=429861

Don't know what to do, as this isn't a request to publish a photo. Can you guys help me prepare a reply?

Thanks

Luis G

Luis,
sounds familiar:

This looks like another mass sent email out for freebies. I'd watch out. Who else has received this?

They want to print 100 tags, any idea of the price I should charge?

Cheers

LOL. If you didn't get it yet companies like this that send emails to everyone are after freebies, in 95% of the cases.

For what they are intending on doing (if they actually do want to print 100 tags) should be priced around 40-75€. Obviously try a higher price, if they really want your picture they'll pay for it...

Tim.

Out of Subject I feel I'm gonna blow a fuse soon seeing soo many requests lately out for freebies...

These guys charge for pilot training (quite a lot of money, I'll bet) and they should factor the cost of photos and luggage tags into their course costs.

However, they don't seem picky over which Citation they get a picture of, so they will get one for free from someone sooner or later - maybe not from airliners.net, but from somewhere. Either that, or they'll rip off a picture and use it anyway, and chances are no one will ever know what they've done.

IMHO these sorts of requests aren't worth the callories and bandwidth in chasing a fee for. Ignore the request, or just say no.

I have a "mass" email ("lettre type" in Francais - Tim help me out) that I keep in a corner of my mailbox for these type of photo requests, along with a standard pricelist. Don't give any free rides to anyone - the price we spend on our cameras and the time we put into this hobby are much too valuable.

the price we spend on our cameras

Especially me, replacing a camera every 6 months costs a lot of money.  Nuts

I don't give any free rides to anyone either. Thank God that some airlines pay very well.

Why replacing a camera every 6 monthes? In 8 years I'm with my 3rd body.

Luis,
started with a shitty 3MP camera which had 3x zoom.

Wanted a larger zoom and more megapixels so got a Nikon 5700.

Wasn't quite satisfied with the amount of grain and the slow autofocus, and wanted to be able to shoot through a viewfinder so I went for the 10D.

Though my 10D is planned to last for at least two years now. Will probably get another L lens next year.

Well I'm hoping my body lasts for 70 or 80 years... Big grin

As to cameras, I think I've had seven (Praktica MTL-3, Canon AE-1, Canon T-90, Canon EOS-650, Canon EOS-5, Canon EOS-3, Canon D60) in around 22 years, so one every three years or so.

Salutory lesson... Give the kiddie-cams a miss if you're seriously into this stuff! Big grin

Well I started from scratch during summer 2002, I think i've gone a long way during a short period of time. Couldn't know I was gonna get addicted into this hobby.

Jeff,
I've had 2 Nikon's in the last year, you'll never see me taking a picture with one again. Canon is soo much better.
