Photo Request, Please Help!

Fri Oct 10, 2003 4:14 am

Hello guys,

I've just received an email from an us aviation company who like to use one of my photographs.

---
Good morning Tobias Rose,

I am seeking permission for the use of one of your photographs #391415 Boeing 767-323/ER. The photo will be framed and on display within one of xxx facilities.

Sincerely
xxx

Should I charge for? If yes, how much?

I really appreciate your help with this. I'm not yet familiar with such requests (one of my firsts)

Thanks in advance

Greetings
Tobi

For what is worth, think of it this way:

Will this company make money with the help of my photo?

Yes: charge a fair fee.
No: consider only the costs of processing and shipping.

Luis
P.S. If the photo is going to be in their wall just as decoration, I would not charge.

I can tell you this "Of course you should charge them".
Is this request from the airline or just aviation company???

Well it'd help if we knew who was asking and where it was going to be - if it is for a major corporate building belonging to American Airlines for example, you should charge a fair bit, but if its just some guy wants a picture for his wall get the picture printed yourself and send it to him charging what it costs for printing and posting plus a reasonable (not too large) mark up for yourself.

Hi Rafal,

the request is from an aviation company who manufacture aircraft parts for Airbus & Boeing...

Well, as Luis said I think its only decoration....

@ Andy

The request is from Parker Aerospace, and they want to display it in one of their facilities...

So I'm not quite sure if I should charge...

Greetings

In this case I would just charge them s&h + cost of the print + (like Andy said) "reasonable (not too large) mark up".

Take care,

They're not going to make any money out of your picture and they're not American Airlines - sounds like they're just going to hang it in their office. So I stick with what I suggested - tell them you'll get it printed (ask them what size they want), and charge them the cost of the print plus the cost of posting it to them plus a reasonable mark-up (maybe between 25% and 50%)for your time and trouble. I'd actually be fairly open and tell them they can have a print and you'll charge them for the print and postage - just tell them that the print will cost a bit more than it really does.

The challenge will probably not be sorting that out - the challenge could be getting the money to you in a form you can actually bank.
