Price Differernces In The Canon 300D

Sun Oct 26, 2003 4:06 pm

Hey all,
Well most of you know that Im going to get a 300D, if you dont, you do now.....!
The price over here, in the UK, is £899 body only. Just out of curiosity I went to amazon.com to see how much it was across the pond. I was amazed at what I found out. The US list price for the Canon 'Digital Rebel' was $899. I convberted that into pounds and it worked out at £599!!! If i bought it over in the US, it would save me £300!

Also, I checked out the difference in prive for a ibm 1GB Microdrive.......at amazon.co.uk the UK list price is £256 while at amazon.com the US list price is $189.95! That works out at £126.63, I would basically get it half price!

Im now seriosuly considering sending it to a member of my familys home in Florida, and they could bring it back for me!

So, why is there such a price difference? There all the same product, apart from, the name.

Cheers,

Simon

It's always been the case  Sad US prices are generally lower than UK, though the gap isn't quite as bad as it used to be.

When asked why, Canon (and other companies) usually talk about distribution costs, market sizes etc. etc.

Don't forget though that US prices may also attract a state sale tax if purchased in the states.

Incidentally, www.7dayshop.com are currently advertising the 300D with lens for £879.85 - body only is not an option.

Cheers,

Watch out for the warranty......purchasing it from the US for use in the UK could null and void it unless you send the camera to the relitives home and have them send it to Cannon for repairs be sure you list yourself as living with them on your reg card.

But maybe Im wrong......

Probably because of taxes, general living expenses & especially the size of the market. The US has some 280+ million people while the UK only has 60. So my guess would be there's more competition & therefore lower prices. The same could be true for Europe. German photo dealers usually have lower prices than dealers abroad. Amazon.de, for example, sell a Microdrive for an equivalent of £124.

There's one problem with buying stuff in the US: You have to add customs & VAT. Time is a ripe for a transatlantic free trade zone ... Big grin

Street price here in the UK for the 300D body is £799 or below - I have seen it advertised for £749 on one occasion. 1GB microdrives are sub-£200 pretty much everywhere and if you shop around you can find them for something nearer £150. If you consider that you'll attract sales tax in the US, if you're not bothered about warantee that applies in the UK, and if you're happy to run the risk of smuggling an import past customs then sure, buy in the US. But if you're prepared to do a bit of leg-work, you can bring UK prices much closer to those in the US.

Go to the IBM website and purchase the 1GB from there.

I got mine there and the price was cheaper than all of the on line UK camera accessory distributors that I tried.

My 1GB Microdrive cost 128.00 GBP...I managed to get carriage free!
Price may have changed though, I got mine back in March.

If you go to Dabs.com you can pick up a 10D with 'Buy Now Pay 12 Months'

Give you a year to save before paying!

Don't think they have any 300D's......I've checked.

Cheers

Try www.newyorkcamera.de. I have bought stuff from them before. I am looking for a good price for the D300 and from their store I will have to pay <900 pounds for the camera and lens and the IBM microdrive. You can also pay them cash when they deliver.

There is also a significant price difference between Canada and the U.S. On average the 300D ("Digital Rebel") costs 33% more in Canada. Doesn't bother me that much however, since I can always take the 10 minute drive over to the States to get my equipment. Big grin

Interesting the prices of cameras around the world. In this tiny market of NZ the following web site is advertising NZ$2200 for the 300D. And that includes 12.5 % GST. Remove the GST for duty free purchase and it comes to about NZ$1955.55.

http://www.discountcameras.co.nz/

Only disadvantage is the number coming in will be limited so there may be a wait for some photographers.
