If you do not plan to get a rental car or hitch a ride, then I'd suggest that you stay inside the terminal, as nothing is within fair walking distance in Dallas!!
The inside of the terminals (airside) is quite good for spotting, as there are loads of floor-to-ceiling windows. Photography is a different matter though, as the majority of those windows have a sheet of wire-mesh screen on the outside, acting as an extra layer of protection against the Texas sun. The only exception seems to be those windows that are towards the north (i.e. facing N, NW
, or NE).
If you're flying AA
, you can stay airside and have access to terminals A, B, and C. Although terminal B is on the west side of the airport, there is an air-conditioned overhead walkway that links it with A.
