Lens Quality- please lend advice

Sun Nov 02, 2003 1:58 pm

Hi, I'm probably going to be purchasing a Canon Digital Rebel soon. I'll need to get a lens and was wondering how Sigma's were, compared to Canon's. Also if anyone has any info about Cameta Camera it would be greatly appreciated.

Sigma makes magnificent lenses, especially their highend series.

While the best Canon lenses are better than the best Sigmas, Sigma will usually give you a better lens for the same money.

Get you the 135-400, the 170-500 or the 50-500 and you'll have a lens of a quality that would set you back twice as much or more had it the name Canon printed on it.
Stay away from their low-end 70-300 lenses, they're not much good.

As with most things, you get what you pay for. Find the quality Sigma lenses and you will probably be happy. As Jwent...pointed out above, the 170-500 is a nice lens for a reasonable price, but be careful and read up on them before you buy.

Excuse me but the 75-300 USM lenses (the 250 euros one) one of the best, if not THE best 75-300 in its pricerange. Ask anyone who uses or used it. Glenn Stewart, Luis Rosa, Ben Pritchard, myself and many others are/were very happy with it. (some of the above use the IS version, but thats basically the same lens) Ok it is not L glas, and you get what you pay for, but you get a hell of a lot when you buy that one.

EDIT: I now see you might mean that the lower end Sigma 70-300s are no good. if thats the case then you are correct  Smile

How about the Sigma 50-500mm? It has pretty nice reviews but I wanted to hear from you guys. I may try to pick one up (or save up more for the 70-200 f/2.8L)...
