Visiting Seattle - Nov 4 And 5 For Concorde

Mon Nov 03, 2003 1:29 am

Gentlemen,

I am planning to visit Seattle to take pictures of Concorde. If anyone can pick me up from the airport, that would definitely be appreciated. Also, I'd like to meet as many photographers out there as possible too.

My flights are as follows -

Nov 4 - DEN-SEA 11:35 13:28 08-02-01 - 096-021-00 735
Nov 5 - SEA-DEN 11:05 14:32 12-03-10 49-11-04 215-212-00 777

Also, are there any decent cheap hotels around the airport? Thanks for the info.

Alex.

According to the Museum of Flight website, arrival time is approx. 3pm on the 5th.

Most hotels/motels are south of Boeing Field, closer to Sea-Tac. They're both on the same road, about a 10 or 15 minute drive. There's a Motel 6, plus Hampton Inn and others. Check out museumofflight.org.

Alex,
DON'T stay in Georgetown (Northern end of BFI.) Unless of course, you like to smoke crack, in which case you should be able to score some killer rocks.

There are plenty of hotels around SeaTac, but you'll have to rent a car to get to BFI. I suggest you take a shuttle van to any one of the hotels downtown. That way you'll be central to everything and won't need a car. Including the Seattle Center. There are a ton of busses that go down E. Marginal Way from downtown.

I noticed in your profile you collect punk rock memorabilia. You should definitely go to the Experience Music Project (http://www.emplive.com) at the Seattle Center. They have a HUGE collection of punk (and general rock) memorabilia. You can take the monorail from downtown to the EMP. No car required.

Have fun in the Emerald City.

William

Now that I think about it, I once stayed in the Motel 6 next to I-5 at the south end of Sea-Tac. Wouldn't do it again...police called for something, pounding on doors, etc. And some of the places along "the strip" are known for rooms by the hour.

If you don't find a ride, there's regular bus service along the road between the two airports...the museum website has the route numbers.

Alex,
There is a Holiday Inn right across the street. Actually there are a bunch of $79 hotels around there. It's only a few miles to where you want to go. A cab would probably be reasonable enough.

Alex,

You are going to have to get a cab and go from SEA to BFI in a hurry. Don't check any baggage. Concorde comes in at 3:00 PM on the fifth, and you get in at 1:28. You're only 15 minutes or so from BFI. Just depemds on how much traffic due to the Concorde. I'd get you but I'll be sitting by the runway at that time.
Good luck.

Same here. Arriving SEA from YVR around 10am in the morning, tickets not purchased yet, cld either be AS or AC.

Leaving the same day at 7pm back to YVR.

Would appreciate if anyone could help showing around or pick up. Currently I only plan to get a cab to BFI and cab back to SEA. But I haven't decided if to see it from the Museum special viewing area or the more prefered perimeter (car park). Is there already a place where all A.net members would meet? Would be great if we could all get together and meet as many members as possible.

Thanks!

Well, if the weather holds (looking good so far) it will land from the south, so you can get a landing shot from the MOF, and then it will taxi back by.

Here is how I plan to attack it

Royal

I assume you mean MOF as in the Museum itself and not the car park right since the car park will be closed to cars and only allowing visitors?

How many mm of range do you need to shoot it coming in to land from the MOF special viewing area?

Ray, you nutta. im not trying to plug my shots, just giving the people coming into town an idea of what to expect!

As for lens reach, you might ask William what he used for this shot, but it prob wasn't more than 100mm on a Dog60.

royal, will you be at the MOF car park or MOF special viewing area set up for Concorde ($5 admission)?

I will be up on the balcony of the museum for the arrival, then hustling down and out to taxiway Bravo as she taxis into the parking lot.

I don't mean to plug either. This was taken from North of the tower and it turned right around the MOF. I used a 28-135 lens. So really from down at the MOF end200 or less ought to get you a good shot.

Hi,

coincidentally I will be in SEA this weekend, but unfortunately not yet on 05th, only on 08th/09th... Does anyone of you know if the Concorde will be parked at a visible place? Or will it be hidden in a hangar?

Cheers,

Thomas

Hey, Royal, that was supposed to be a joke, as both Concorde and interior shots bring in the hits!! I wasn't talking about plugging your 727!!!

And since you suggested via your pics that you may get an interior shot that day, I thought such pics would be popular with the viewers.

Enjoy Wednesday!

I shot the 773ER shot with a 28-135mm on my D(amnGoodCamera)60.

I believe the MoF is putting up a seating area in the parking lot. It would be worth buying a ticket as otherwise you're going to have a tough time getting a shot over the fence. If it arrives on time, you're gonna need to be on the West side of the runway for proper light. The place is probably going to be a madhouse so getting there early isn't just advised, it's probably mandatory.

I'll have a very long lens that day and am currently in discussions to get a VERY nice location to shoot from. Weather permitting. If the weather goes to hell, I'll probably be on the terrace rubbing shoulders with 200+ people, all trying to knock my tripod over. (Including Royal.)

Airport Way S. is probably a good location, but not for photography as you'll be shooting into a very low sun. But from there you can't get any closer to the runway without getting arrested.

The people in the background of this shot have pulled over off of Airport Way S.

Midfield Park (just South of the tower) should be good for some thrust-reverser shots and roll out. That's guaranteed to be packed too though. It was for the Stratoliner departure.

This was shot from Midfield.

The question of the century is, "Will there be a flyby?" No one knows. But I am hoping for a "missed approach."  Big grin

If you're a true plane buff, you gotta eat at Randy's Diner, just South of the Museum of Flight on E. Marginal Way. The place is all aviation-themed and there's some great, rare photographs on the walls. Don't be frightened by the waitresses, they're actually all very nice despite the attitude. Tip 'em well.

Good luck everybody!

I'm wondering about my 10D with 100-400L IS, its kinda seems like over kill, but I don't know, the only other lens I have is a 24-85, which may not be enough. So I guess I have a question, so I go up on the balcony at the MoF? Or get a $5 ticket for that special area in the lot? Thanks!

And return on Horizon at 6:30pm.

Now, another problem, how to get from the parking lots of BFI to SEA? Can I catch a cab there easily?

Alex,

Due to the time you come in, 1328, and the time the Concorde gets in, 1500, and the possible traffic jams, I think your best bet is to get a cab, and tell them; "Take me to the Museum of Flight". I'm getting there at 8:00AM, not about to give up a spot. Someone else may have a better idea though. It sounds like a big crowd will be there, but no one really knows. Good luck and have a good flight. Hopefully we'll all meet at Randy's before or after.

If getting a cab back from BFI to Sea-Tac is a problem, there's regular bus service along East Marginal/International Way between the two airports, route #174. Their URL is:

Hmm, I don't think I'll go get a rental car, but I'll probably get a cab to drive me over there. Any idea how much it may cost? Also, I may be able to get there earlier; I'll let everyone know. As for Museum of Flight, will everyone be there, or how is it all going to happen?

Jeff, are you coming too? That would be nice to see another Denver photog up there.

Alex no, not going to be there. I had three destinations this week for travel, I did not choose Seattle. I am not a huge concorde fan as most are, so messing with the crowds and traffic did not make sense to me. I'll just catch it later on down the road when all the fan fare has died down. Besides, if I had come, it surely would rain....

Have fun, get some good shots. Is Aaron or Tim going?

I just wanted to say "Good Luck" to all of you coming out to BFI tomorrow (Wednesday).

This will be a thrilling moment for the Museum, Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. I think it's really cool that this event is bringing a lot of people with a common passion together at once. These moments are rare and I hope everyone gets the shots they are aiming for. I, for one, have a shot list I am planning on getting. Best case scenario, I'll get an approach shot with Mt. Rainier as a backdrop. (Fingers crossed.) If it comes in on-time, the light should be superb.

Again, best of luck to you all. For those of you visiting Seattle ... welcome. I hope to meet some of you and finally put some faces to usernames.

Let's all hope for a go-around and some rattled windows!

Heads up. Looks like the they will be approaching from the North, not the South. From the MoF web site:

Concorde is scheduled to arrive over Boeing Field in Seattle on November 5th at 2:50 p.m., landing at 3:00 p.m. Approach is likely to be over Elliott Bay at approximately 2:45 p.m.

Looks like a pass over Elliott Bay in front of downtown.

I wonder if they would still land to the south even if the outward flow from Seatac is to the north? The Blue Angels did it...I hope the Concorde doesn't.
